Sixty-nine years after the end of World War II, nearly a third of Austrians would like to have a strong leader (Führer) at the helm of their country who doesnt have to deal with elections and a parliament, according to a new study published on Wednesday in Vienna.
Asked about what Nazi rule from 1938 to 1945 had given the country, 36 percent of the 1,015 Austrians surveyed answered both good and bad things while three percent said primarily good things. [ ]
A clear majority of respondents (56 percent) said discussions about the Holocaust and the Second World War should now end. This figure was higher than in previous surveys.

Mitch, you raise a good point. As an example, Hitler was terrified that his father may have been the illegitimate child of a wealthy Austrian Jew who had hired his grandmother as a maid. So, to hide that possibility he had the village where all of this may have occurred blasted off of the map - paying particular attention to the cemetery, synagogue and church where the evidence may exist.

“old German soldiers who felt like they were being wrongly smeared”
They were just following orders.......
I think some of it is longing for a time when they were more important in the world, and equating that with Hitler.
Take note that the interstates took the form of the largest public works project in the country. Private sector? If they knew how to LOL back then, they would have.
No thought required, much like our zero tolerance policies.
We had a few toll roads but it wasnt easy to get around.
“Someone correct me if wrong but did not Austria cater to the Germans in WWII?”
They were incorporated into Germany in 1938. In the 1860s two German states (Austria & Prussia) battled for supremacy of the hundreds of smaller German entities, and Prussia won. While they led the new Germany formed in 1871, Austria looked south for an empire (Austria-Hungary, which collapsed after WWI). In 1938 the much smaller Austria joined Germany; as German troops crossed the border to make it so, there can be some questions about Austria’s complicity in it. The allies, who had said this couldn;t happen at the end of WWI, did nothing.
The German army had little to do with the mass murders; this was mostly done by SS units that followed the combat troops (Einsatzgruppen). The German army tried to keep their independence, and attempted to kill Hitler. Even the Malmedy massacre on the Western Front was perpetrated by an SS unit.
Somebody had to round up all the Jews, Romani, and Slavs in the vast Nazi occupied territories for the SS to murder, and it was the Wehrmacht that did it. The Wehrmacht also supplied soldiers and equipment to assist in the mass executions and burials.
That was the point of the Wehrmacht Exhibition, to knock down the myth.
They did have very sharp looking uniforms. And the trains ran on time...at least until we started daylight bombing raids.
Maybe we should let the 8th AF and Bomber Command pay them a visit or two like we did at Dresden, hamburg, Berlin, etc.

The 8th AF and bomber command paid a very high price. Not sure we could field enough pilots for the B-17s today.
Austria annexed with Germany early on willingly. So yes, they were on the same side.
Hitler vas, shore, a fairy badt mann. But at least he luft docs undt schilderns.
In 1934 there were 176,034 Jews in Austria, or about 9% of the population. In 1951, there were 9,000 or about 0.6% of the population.

The greatest achievement of Austria in the 20th Century was convincing the world that Hitler was a German and Bach was an Austrian.
If you follow the law, you're a chump, while the connected, the politicians, the crooks and gangsters all get incredibly weathly, while your situation deteriorates.
Eventually, people look for a strong man to bring the government under control and make it behave rationally.
They never ever try limited government and individual freedon. So, Europe goes through these political cycles.
“Eventually, people look for a strong man to bring the government under control and make it behave rationally.”
That makes sense.
A strange astronomical phenomenon. The dark night of fascism is ever descending on the United States, but it always lands in Europe.
Only 2 of 5?
The Austrian Nazis were so fanatic, the Germans had to tell them to tone it down a notch.
