Russia has its problems, but they dont include a negative population growth rate contrary to common wisdom. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, birth rates among native Russians tanked and death rates began slowly climbing. Around 1992, deaths in Russia exceeded births.
Analysts of Russian affairs have ever since taken it for granted that Russia faces a demographic crisis that will slowly but surely thrust the country into a perilous state of affairs where its economy shrinks as population declines (Western sanctions over Crimea are a drop in the bucket in this picture).
The only problem with this hypothesis is that, while it was true for a majority of the 1990s and the early 2000s, the most recent data suggest that the trend has started reversing and Russia is headed towards positive population growth, with more births than deaths.

Right on the cusp
This is a new development, and of the trend continues it will be a huge story. But, it’s still to early to see.
Most of the growth is actually in Dagestan and Chechnya. The average lifespan of a 15 year old male in Russia is under 60 years. Don’t tell that to the “Putin Hates Fags” fanboys.
Today’s Wall Street Journal had a piece on this. They argued that the population of ethnic Russians is still declining, and the rising birth rate is only due to Moslem immigrants.
It is a small echo baby boom that will be short lived.
And as others have stated, this mini echo boom is disproportionately among Muslim minorities.
It will take a few more years to see if it is a lasting trend, but Russia is the only developed country I know with a rising birth rate. They are also one of the few who truly understand the effects of a demogrqaphic implosion.
Russians aren't PC when it comes to dealing with restless Muslims.
Neither are Muslims when dealing with Christians and post Christians.
In 2050-2060 it will be the Mongol Horde all over again.
Odd that you would trust the news pages of the WSJ, which lean left. Moreover, the WSJ editorial board hates anyone whose last name is “Paul” and libertarians generally. It is about as GOPe a publication as there is, and they are infected with Bill Kristol style foreign policy and a view of domestic policy that tells them that McConnell has it about right.
I don’t trust the WSJ, especially the news stories on sensitive issues, and I often wonder why I subscribed.
We just pay Mexican women to have babies.
Is it Russians who are reproducing, or the invading hordes of bearded savages?
Russia’s population may be growing, but the Russian population is not growing. Muslims in Russia are increasing in number.
My girlfriend is a Russian citizen living in Moscow, and she told me last week that the Russian government will pay roughly $11,000 to a Russian woman who has a child. Despite that, there aren’t enough people using the program so they are considering doing away with it.
Then get going, pal. Marry her and let the Russkies pay for your wedding.
Well, I don’t really want to live in Russia.
