LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) Islamic militants killed hundreds of people in an attack on a border town in Nigeria's remote northeast, a state government official said Thursday.
Shops and homes were set ablaze and razed in the attack Monday night on Gamboru Ngala, on Nigeria's border with Cameroon, Borno state information commissioner Mohammed Bulama told The Associated Press by telephone.
He said the fatality "figures are high hundreds but we are still awaiting details from the military authorities."
As many as 300 people were killed in the attack, according to local newspapers. The militants sprayed gunfire into the crowds of people at a busy market that is open at night when temperatures cool in the semi-desert region, reported ThisDay newspaper.
Nigerian federal Senator Ahmed Zannah said the attack lasted about 12 hours, according to the newspaper. The insurgents set homes on fire and gunned down residents who tried to escape from the flames, reported the paper.

No word here on if these killed are Christians.
They probably are, so this will get Obama-canned by the MSM and the White Hut itself.
What the Hell, we just sent advanced weapons to the Muzzie rebels in Syria who are slaughtering Christians so you want arms for the Muzzies in Nigeria, too? That should keep anyone from calling us "do-gooders".
You’re saying I’m advocating we arm the Islamists in Nigeria? Is that what I read?
Not really. But, I guess if everyone is guilty, anything goes, in your world.

Militants? What sort of militants?
Gosh and golly, did I say everyone was guilty, I must have missed that part. But if I ever want lessons on how to be judgemental I’ll look you up okay?
So, you tell me, you wanna arm the Muzzies to prove we're not "do-gooders" the same way democrat fascists arm them to prove we're don't have a "Christian bias"?
If you can help stop Christians being butchered for their Faith and you don't, how are you not an accomplice unless helping to stop it is the lesser of a set of evils? A dozen guys who know what they're doing could probably track and ambush the little groups of scum doing this in several areas. Who's training the Nigerians to develop a few dozen skilled teams of a dozen guys each? Our doing it would be massive involvement, a greater evil than doing nothing?
So, being an accomplice for no good reason is a problem for you or it's not.
Write it off as ". . . for good men to do nothing" and sit on our hands, right?
The Islamists that are in collusion with the Government of Nigeria, of course.
So, are you an accomplice for not flying over there and helping out?
Or, are you an accomplice for not driving into Mexico to stop the slaughter of Christians that's happening there every day?
Either that's a problem for you or it's not.
The Nigerian military is a train wreck of thoroughly disinterested conscripts led by twelve star generals given their position for no other reason than they’re relatives of whatever junta is currently in power.
They’ve been involved in no less than ten military coups between 1966 and 1999, but you’ll never find them even remotely close to geographic locations where they might encounter Boko Haram.
Nigeria is sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous nation and second largest economy. They’re an OPEC member, sitting on lots of offshore oil, and could easily fall into the hands of Islamists who attack with impunity killing hundreds of people at a time.
It’s our next little war, I’m fairly certain. Expect a big media drive soon to get Americans interested in sending US troops there. Gosh, isn’t it just AWFUL?
Obama has consistently been on the wrong side. I get that. Let me come at it from this.
If our military could come up with a mission to rescue those being held, would that be a good thing or a bad thing? I’m not saying our troops execute the mission - let Nigeria hire it out if they don’t have the competence.
But we figure out the mission, then turn it over. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing?
Typical.
If you want it on an individual basis, fine, I'd do a Hell of a lot of things if I were able to walk well and carry my own weight but unfortunately, I haven't been able to do that ever since I was wounded in VN.
So, play your games all you like, the subject was US intervention not individual intervention and you wussed out as soon as you were confronted.
all cultures are equal don’t you know
I can see why you figure that and you may be right but unless something changes dramatically the US isn't going to get involved in fighting any Muzzies that have solid backing from the Saudis and Boko apparently gets plenty of Saudi money.
I know a guy who worked in Nigeria for several years and he says there are groups within the military who would fight Boko and want to do so. The problem is as you state it, though, troops are kept around places where their general is afraid of a revolt or to be ready for a coup in the cities, not out where they're needed.
I don't know if there's anyone you could work with but you could surely build teams of people who would stand watch and be prepared to defend themselves out in the countryside. If that's not possible, hunting down rabid Muzzies is worthwhile even it if has to be done without the locals knowing what's going on. At least that's my opinion, one bound to be unpopular.
The fact that millions of muzlims across the globe ‘misunderstand’ the teachings of their peaceful faith is surely upsetting to the people in DC that are apparently the only people on earth that know what it REALLY is about.
