Irish justice minister quits in blow to government

Ireland’s justice minister resigned Wednesday in a surprise blow to the country’s 3-year-old coalition government after a state-ordered investigation concluded that he mishandled the complaints of a police corruption whistleblower.

Alan Shatter said in a letter he was quitting to ease criticism of the government when the more than 300-page report is published later this week.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny, who received the report Tuesday night, announced the news to the audible gasps of lawmakers in Ireland’s parliament. Many opposition politicians had called for Shatter to resign, but it’s rare in Ireland for any politician to quit in the face of scandal.

Kenny said he accepted Shatter’s resignation “with regret,” but said the report had found that Shatter responded inadequately to complaints of police corruption made by a serving officer, Maurice McCabe. …

Another Eurocrat gone, only to have others waiting in the wings that are most likely worse.

Ireland’s [just-us] minister resigned ...

Gee, he did it even though he wasn't in contempt of parliament?

They must be under orders from the Euro-elites to keep Ireland chaotic.

Err...New York can’t be a mess if Ireland is a mess? At least, we don’t have a Gerry Adams representing “the people”...yet.

And I stick by my original comment: Ireland is (and always has been) A MESS!

Didn’t seem a mess to me and my wife when we spent three weeks there five years ago. In fact, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Take a trip there some time miss Marmelstein, you might enjoy it as well.

Oh, please. I’ve been to Ireland more times than I care to admit. And I spent at least one decade of my life with the flotsam and jetsam of Irish immigrants who overrun New York City whenever their society and economy falls apart. Freepers seem to have a weird affection for the Irish - not reciprocated, I might add - that completely amazes me.

You’ve been there more times than you care to admit, and there’s nothing about it you like?

Dublin certainly improved over 30 years. When I first went there it was loaded with street people - women carrying filthy babies - and grabbing tourists to beg for money. The second time I went there, I was set upon by gypsy children, lol, in Grafton Street. It cleaned up in the 1990s but by then I didn’t care. Give me London any day!

One more thing: my comments about Ireland are less to do with my personal experiences than with the increasingly terrible anti-Americanism and anti-Israel sentiment that has overtaken Ireland. I do believe Ireland is considered the most anti-Israel country in the EU. Their president is a foaming-at-the-mouth America and Israel hater. The chat rooms of the Irish Echo and other Irish-American publications are foul-mouthed screeds against America - the country that has traditionally given them a home when their country fell apart.

I like both cities. And yes, I was beset by a beggar or two in Dublin. But the wife and I still had a lot of fun there and elsewhere in Ireland.
