An angry reader one of many is impatiently waiting for me to explain myself after an earlier column in which I characterized anti-fluoride activists as delusional cranks.
You are promoting the mass medication of your community, she wrote. It makes absolutely no sense to put this hazardous waste into our drinking water. Why are you pushing for this insane practice? I look forward to your response.
I have a response, but she wont like it: I am at an honest loss as to how to respond to crazy talk. If someone wants to believe flying saucers are beaming gamma rays into his flower beds, he is self-evidently resistant to logic. What are you supposed to say?
Anti-fluoridation quackery isnt the comical Eisenhower-era anachronism you might suspect. Its alive and well right here in Dallas, where activists are trying to persuade members of the Dallas City Council to end five decades of routine water fluoridation. Disturbingly, at least a few council members seem to be listening.

Give me potable water and use only the amount of chemical disinfectants necessary to make it so. If I decide to add any other chemicals to my body I will do it myself.
So I don't share your opinion. So, what?
Who is going to decide what amount of, and which kind of, chemical disinfectants are necessary to make your water potable? You? Or is that the water board's responsibility, within their charter? And, if by public vote, there was a decision to fluoridate the water, are you leaving town?
All I'm saying is that, if the water board wants to fluoridate -- and has both the authority, via its charter, and a sufficient budget -- I'd support that decision. Or, if the public voted for it, I wouldn't be troubled by it.
I understand that you would feel otherwise. But would you leave town over it? And, if so, bye-bye...
Now Alcoa can get rid of its poisonous by product without dumping it in our water......http://www.naturalnews.com/045028_fluoride_flexible_batteries_storable_energy.html
Funny, the written record of posts doesn’t support your contention.
Then, you are not only not paying attention, you can't count either.
Five times -- count 'em, FIVE -- I have introduced the use of a referendum or public vote of some kind. That is, every...damn...time...implementation was appropriate to the response.
You have yet to respond to my associated question as to whether you would even abide by such a vote.
With all due respect, this exchange has become a tedious exercise in confronting an obdurate obtuseness. I've better things to do and will withdraw from the thread.
See ya 'round the forum...
