The California Legislature is looking at a voluntary program that would tax motorists for every mile they drive.

KCAL9’s Bobby Kaple reports that Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, introduced a bill to test out the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax because the state’s gas tax was no longer bringing in the revenue it used to due to people driving more fuel efficient vehicles.

"Voluntary". Yeah, for how long? If they do that, will they reduce the tax at the pump? LOL! Of course not. How silly of me. Sounds like BS to me. Are there really that many priuses on the road in cali that it's reducing the income from the gas taxes? Or is just more fuel efficient cars doing it. Can you get an exemption if you don't have a super dooper fuel efficient vehicle?

What better way to keep the populace from moving around unchecked. This is 1/2 step away from “your papers please.”

Californistan is a hostile, communist foreign nation.

It would be ironic if electric cars in California get taxed at double the rate for gasoline powered vehicles since they currently pay no gas taxes.

So half a dollar per gallon gas tax is not enough? The money goes into the general funds so how much has been robbed? Social Security has been robbed by $13.4T to make excuses to rob other funds.

Horse hockey. The gas tax brings in more than enough. It is the state legislature diverting funds for social programs that is the problem.

My bet is that income from the gas tax has remained stable they just need more money to sustain their massive spending.

Hey, if they want to put Democrats in charge of every aspect of their lives, this is the price they’ll have to pay.

Of course they are, that's where most of this radical insanity starts. Then it moves to Maine...Then it goes nationwide.

Of course any will-of-the-people proposals, initiated by the CA voters, is immediately killed by the Ninth Circus Court of Shlemiels.

Heck, they will never need to even utter the phrase or have any contact with you at all. All any state official will have to do is point a scanner in the general direction of your vehicle and "read" your mandatory mileage transponder as you pass buy and all your identifying information (your papers) will automatically appear on the screen courtesy of the DMV. (Except for illegal aliens of course, who will be exempt because of self incrimination and all that...)

IIRC, Repubs in Virginia proposed that electric cars be taxed to make up lost gas tax revenue. Pretty sure the libs went ballistic.

My god how much more stupid can those idiots in California be? Forrest Gump could run that state better than Governor Moonbeam and the Democratic-controlled state legislature combined.

If they start doing this, the populace of California that has a shred of common sense/self respect/self-preservation left will be a dust cloud on the horizon as they stampede out of California for TX or other less socialist states.

The taxpayers built those roads and have paid for them many times over. We should propose taxing all government officials and tax-exempt foundation employees for every mile they fly, a much more expensive use of fossil fuel than driving.
