Is NATO ready for Russia’s new-generation warfare?
The Lithuania Tribune ^ | May 4, 2014 | Edward Lucas

Posted on 05/05/2014 6:19:16 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

War in Western eyes involves an orderly sequence of ultimatums, declarations of war, invasions, counterattacks, second and third fronts, and finally a negotiated surrender, payment of reparations and a new territorial settlement. Annoyingly, Vladimir Putin is not following that script Edward Lucas writes.

The Latvian defence analyst Jānis Bērziņš has written an excellent new paper (available at is.gd/berzins) outlining Russia’s approach to “new-generation warfare”, based on analysis of material in the Russian military press.

He argues that the new frontline in this kind of conflict is mental, not physical. Russia uses psychological warfare, intimidation, bribery, and propaganda to undermine resistance to the point that firepower is not needed. If the soldiers on the other side lack the plans, supplies, training, leadership and orders to resist, they will not – and cannot.

To illustrate this, imagine that Ukraine had been a well-run country. Russia’s seizure of Crimea could have never happened. Government forces would have blocked airspace and road junctions, cut communications and power supplies to Russian bases, disabling and blunting the attack before it gained momentum. The local police and security agencies would have been loyal and effective, meaning that pro-Kremlin provocations met a united response from law-enforcement and civil society. Short of declaring all-out war, Russia’s land grab would have failed....

It’s not really new.

That’s how Hitler took the Rhineland, as I recall. I don’t know if Putin would back down if we sent a fully equipped army though.

You mean history isn’t over, and Russia is still Russia?

I have read posts that even claim that the American military will not fight against Mother Russia, and will refuse to take up arms against Putin.

Where would we find a “fully equipped army” that would adequately deter Russia? And how would we transport it there?

This Russian colossus stuff is silly.

Putin is sending unlawful combatant Chechen terrorists into a neighboring country. What a brilliant tactician. Any tin pot African dictator could have done the same.

I don’t doubt UKR troops will start getting pin point accurate intel from the locals once the Chechens start raping local women.

If an American were president, I doubt he’d have ever attempted it.

Well, maybe a LITTLE firepower ... shoot a few cops ... start a riot ... that kind of stuff. 'Course this is backed up by the felt presence of the BIG firepower.

You don't need an army.

You put tactical nukes in Ukraine, Poland, and Alaska and threaten to blow the Russkies off the map.

That’s how Hitler took the Rhineland, as I recall.

I thought Shirer or somebody called this a pure bluff. A ceremonial march across a bridge, with retreat as the backup plan, as they weren't quite ready for the real thing at this point. Nevertheless Hitler called it correctly.

In what way are Chechen terrorists “Ukrainian patriots”?

You seem unable to discern the difference between transnational unlawful warfare and civil unrest.

The extremely dangerous aspect of what is going on right now in Ukraine is the transnational irregular warfare aspect.

Read the Paulbot post #10 who literally just posted one tired examples of the Putin propaganda talking points being drummed out by the Putin KGB internet troll squad

We literally have useful idiots here doing Putin's dirty work and spreading his smear campaign against the Ukraine.

The isolationist paulbot dupes are too dim to realize that parroting hysterical Russian propaganda is only going to fool the dimmest bulbs into their camps.

There is a special place in Hell for the leader of a country who sends armed Chechen terrorists into his neighbor. This is revolting stuff and a huge blunder for Team KGB.

Ukrainian police, intelligence and troops are heavily infiltrated by Russian operatives and 5th Columnists. That is why early attempts to stop the riots and takeovers failed.
