Pro-Russian separatists shot down two helicopters in a key eastern Ukrainian city, and fighting in the port city of Odessa triggered a fire that killed dozens, as the embattled nation moved closer to the brink of civil war.
Interim Ukraine President Oleksandr Turchynov said "many" pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in a major offensive to regain control of Slavyansk, though it was not clear if the Kiev-backed forces had succeeded. Russia reacted angrily to the offensive by Ukrainian security forces, calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council after a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin warned it "effectively destroyed the last hope for the implementation of the Geneva agreements."
In the Black Sea port city of Odessa, Ukraine's third-largest city, a fire that broke out in a trade union building amid clashes killed 31. Fighting there represented another ominous milestone in the conflict that threatens to become a full-blown civil war, as Odessa holds huge historic significance for Russians and Ukrainians alike.

Years ago on FR I read an article called something like “Hitler’s Library”. Someone had found most of his personal books, read through them, saw notes Hitler had written in them, placemarks and so on.
He basically thought he was god.

Crimea and adjacent territories were united in the Crimean Khanate during the 15th to 18th century before falling to the Russian Empire and being organised as its Taurida Oblast in 1783. In 1954, the Soviet Crimean Oblast was transferred from Russia to Ukraine. It became the Autonomous Republic of Crimea within newly independent Ukraine in 1991, with Sevastopol having its own administration within Ukraine but outside of the Autonomous Republic.To the extent that the conquest and annexation of Crimea to the Russian empire was legal, its transfer to Ukraine by that same Russian empire was also legal.

I’ve read the entire thread, and seen your posts around here. His criticism of you seemed valid to me, at least at present and on this issue, regardless of your years of service fighting the USSR I think you mentioned elsewhere. And the fact that his post, the one I responded to, was immediately followed by some internet meme or something from you, even though it was a response to something farther up the thread, made his point for him.
Every time I post here, right under the buttons to do so, there is a reminder in italics to not engage in personal attacks, along with a reminder to not use profanity, racism, or violence. Maybe it’s just on my version of Free Republic. If we can’t hash disagreements out here about a foreign country or two with fact-based argument, which by definition would leave out name-calling and other ad hominem attacks, what hope do we have to reverse the deep-set rot in our country? I know it’s not just you. And I know I haven’t behaved perfectly here either.

Nonsense. Just because some group of people is rioting doesn't mean that the parliament of some country is so cowed that they vote what the group wants. You act as if the Ukrainian parliament members are a bunch of wimps. Couldn't they just as well voted to have the military crush the dissidents? Of course they could have, but they didn't.
In case you haven't noticed the average Ukrainian girl isn't as wimpy as you claim the members of the parliament are.
See, there you go again. If someone disagrees with you about this, it doesn’t make them Russian propagandists. They might very well be - they do exist and cyber warfare has long been a Russian specialty, and I expect there are Russians with accounts on this site, even if it might not be many. But you’re going to have to do better than just making that unsubstantiated accusation to invalidate their argument, that is, if you want objective people who are watching this unfold to agree with you. Sure it might be entertaining for some of the participants, and maybe even some of the observers, but so is a jackass painted to look like a zebra for many people. Somehow we have to get through the next couple of years of this Kenyan clown-show.
If it happened the way it did in Ukraine with militant skinhead groups chasing the president out of office and then standing around government building intimidating the remaining lawmakers, damn straight it’s a coup.
If you disagree with me, you are not a propagandist. If you spread propaganda, you are. And propaganda is not simply “information with which I disagree,” either. There’s no point in discussing this if we cannot agree on terminology.
What you say is an insult to the Ukrainians, even those who had earlier supported Yanukovych but voted against him in February. Maybe some Putin loving Russians are weaker than a tiny kitten, but most Ukrainian men, and even girls aren't intimidated by protestors. After all, the girls in the street facing the Berkut and Russian agents weren't intimidated, were they?
Good try spouting Russian propaganda, maybe in your world adult men are as weak as kittens, but not so much elsewhere, and certainly not in Ukraine.
I’m not saying he’s a great guy. But they should have unelected him, impeached him, or gone through some legal, democratic process. Instead, they replaced the legitimate government with a band of thugs, many of whom actually are Nazi-party (Svoboda) members.
