As the U.S. economy teetered on the brink of contraction in the first quarter, one thing stood out. Healthcare spending increased at its fastest pace in more than three decades.
That surge is attributed to the implementation of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, known as Obamacare. Because of Obamacare, the nation narrowly avoided its first decline in output in three years.
"GDP growth would have ... been negative were it not for healthcare spending," said Harm Bandholz, chief economist at UniCredit Research in New York.
Healthcare spending increased at a 9.9 percent annual rate, the quickest since the third quarter of 1980, and it contributed 1.1 percentage points to GDP growth.

“Spinning disastrous economic news as a positive - an Obamacare rescue story.”
Expect this nonsense to go on in perpetuity; any unverifiable praise for ObamaCare will do. If it was true it could only be because Americans have fallen further into debt to pay for medical care; more likely it is just nonsense thrown out there for an ignorant public without the means of verifying it (like so many proclamations from this regime - remember “jobs created or saved”?).
Lucia, the author, apparently doesn’t understand the difference between health INSURANCE and health CARE.
Obamacare forces people and businesses (other than the millions who are exempt) to buy insurance, but there’s no guarantee of them obtaining health care.
“Seems to me all they are doing is taking your money and my money and giving it to someone else and that leaves you and I less money to spend elsewhere.”
Sure, but it still makes a good headline. In other news, ObamaCare has slowed global warming; it has also changed the orbit of the moon in a way that will benefit mankind for millenia. They can really say anything they want, can’t they?
Now if the Gov can prevent money from going out eventually, like denile of care, growth of Gov will skyrocket until there isn’t enough people alive to pay enough taxes.
There you have it........ a negative perfect storm. A vector resolution of failure
The positive growth vector is Obamadon’tcare increased health care cost.
One negative vector is general decline
the third vector is winter.
By resolving them you get .1% growth
The number, the minuscule number is meaningless, in its self but the bad feeling, the general feeling of unease, of pain, generated by the vents is devastating.
The crap..... the resigned queer denouncer, the tired old basket ball owner, the Nevada cow boy..... all are conscious and malicious actions to detract from the economic flat spin.
