Texas Rep. Joe Barton must have been reading the new polling data this week that shows Republicans are headed for victory in November. Like any good establishment Republican, Barton could not let our prospective victory go unanswered and is seeking a way to stifle Republican turnout. What better way to accomplish victory than by introducing comprehensive amnesty legislation?
Joe Barton plans to file his bill this week, but he refuses to call it amnesty. After all, he claims, there is no pathway to citizenship.
But there are two fundamental problems with his assertion. His bill incorporates the so-called Dream Act, which grants full amnesty plus citizenship to a large swath of the illegal population. As weve noted before, these people are largely poor and low-skilled. They would be eligible for the entire smorgasbord of welfare programs. They certainly would not pay taxes on net, as some have suggested. They would actually enjoy a net negative tax liability.
Moreover, once you have amnesty for Dreamers it is de facto amnesty for everyone else because: A) they can bring in family members, and B) anyone can potentially be eligible, so ICE would have to suspend all deportations to allow illegals a reasonable opportunity to present their case. Sans a proposal to change birthright citizenship first, the Dream Act would expand our anchor baby magnet to an anchor teenager phenomenon.
This bill would be bad enough if it only contained the Dream Act. But it grants immediate legal status to everyone else. That is amnesty. People who violated our sovereignty are rewarded with the outcome they desired by breaking the law. Citizenship is merely the icing on the cake Amnesty-PLUS.

If amnesty is a foregone conclusion I think we should be focusing on extracting Economic or Territorial concessions from Mexico because they are the biggest exporter of Economic, political and criminal refugees to the U.S.
What possible blackmail is going on to prompt these Repubs to commit political suicide just before an election? I have heard some people (aka ‘Dummies) say they are going to vote for the Dems because of this Amnesty baloney. Lord help us!
Even that isn’t worth the tradeoff. Just let them all go home.
A law clarifying “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” of the 14th Amendment to prevent illegal aliens from gaining birthright citizenship would be an excellent first step. It’s absolutely ludicrous to believe the 14th Amendment was written to let people sneak across the border, have a baby, grant citizenship to that baby, and then use that citizenship to bring in their extended families!
Illegal aliens are not subject to the jurisdiction, i.e. legal control, of the US government. They’re lawbreakers who are here in violation of immigration law. They have no legitimate or moral claim to anything in this country beyond a quick deportation!
That may be true, but if the issue of Economic or Territorial concessions became a talking point, things would slow down awfully quick.
Think outside the box. Think Political JuJutsu.
I don’t want to think outside the box or negotiate with Mexico. I just want them to go home.
That's the same line of baloney GWB tried to palm off on us. Anything other than arrest and deportation is amnesty.
Bump
Id be happy if Grimm, Ellmers, Barton, Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, McCarthy and Denham lost to a Dem if it came to that.
There will probably be a net gain in other areas to offset this and keep around 230 house Republicans.
This needs to be in the Texas sidebar. I don’t see it.
