HELENA, Mont. -- A western Montana man charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old exchange student in his garage is receiving death threats and is afraid to leave his home, the man's attorney said Tuesday.
Markus Kaarma, 29, was released from jail Monday after posting a $30,000 bond on a charge of deliberate homicide in the death of Diren Dede of Hamburg, Germany. Since then, Kaarma, his partner Janelle Pflager and their 10-month-old baby won't leave their Missoula home after receiving the threats, attorney Paul Ryan said.
"They're really on edge about what's going to happen to them and their baby. They're captives in their own home," he said.
Kaarma is a wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service who moved to Missoula a few months ago. He originally is from Mercer Island, Wash., and he moved to Montana to pursue his dream job in a place where he wants to raise his family, Ryan said.
Kaarma and Pflager's home had been burgled twice since they moved in a few months ago and they were frustrated and disappointed in the lack of police assistance, the attorney said.
Just days before the shooting, Kaarma told a woman that his house had been burglarized a couple of times and he had been waiting up for three nights with his shotgun to shoot "some f------ kid," court records said.

Then we're in complete agreement.
What’s the problem. Invade property and begin stealing what do you think is going to happen, the owners will greet you with a glass of lemonade and a sandwich?

Hear say
Don’t roll the dice if you can’t pay the price
Don’t do it
Don’t run your feet down a dead-end street
Keep your eye on the sparrow
When the going gets narrow
Don’t do me dirt or you’re gonna get hurt
Don’t do it
Don’t run away till you hear what I say
Keep your eye on the sparrow
When the going gets narrow
Ain’t gonna fight with no thief in the night
Won’t do it
I’m gonna go where the cold wind don’t blow
Keep your eye on the sparrow
When the going gets narrow...
Or a speed trap.
I'm not sure what you mean by that statement? Burglary is an unauthorized entry into a dwelling for the purpose of committing an offense and I do not believe you have to ascertain whether the burglar is armed before you shoot. This fellow had been burglared in the past. Cops set up decoy situations all the time. The only difference is that this is a ‘dwelling,’ which means absolutely stay the hell out unless you first obtain permission to come inside. Admittedly, the decoy aspect in this situation is unique, but I do not believe it should change the castle defense rule.
Even with the Castle Law the homeowner has been arrested.
It’s the baiting of the trap in hopes of killing a burglar that is the problem.
He wasn’t hoping to catch the burglar but hoping to kill him.
He wasn’t shooting out of fear but out of anger.
He wasn’t afraid the burglar would come but hoping for it and expecting it.
And four shots in a dark garage???
What was the kid doing in garage? If he was in there by mistake, it was sad. If he was there for criminal activity, sorry he was stupid.
In CO entering a home or a vehicle is the same - a felony. It does not matter if it is locked, open, etc.
The law doesn't provide the death penalty for burglary. Post # 27 explains it pretty well.
And it you're not in the police they call it a crime. Different standards for the peasants and for the king's men. Police are held to a much lower standard than the rest of us.
BAD HOMEOWNER! BAD!! How rotten of you to set up a burglar alarm and video monitoring system after having already been burgled twice. You're making it too hard to redistribute your wealth to others.
Just a guess, but I'd say he was burglarizing the place.
That goes double for the police
Interesting...a similar situation here - http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3150105/posts where the homeowner waited in ambush for 2 burglars...
The owners are not only expected to turn on their lights, invite the thief in, apologize for not providing transportation directly to their door, have a sign available saying the house does not meet the requirements of the Americans for Disability Act, provide a comprehensive menu (with caloric estimates) of any meal the thief desires which must then be served to said thief, but must also provide a list of all items of value on the premises over $1.00 and help deliver the selected goods to the thief's residence.
In multiple trips, if need be.
That SOUNDS silly, I admit.
But we are already doing much the same with our tax money, giving it to people who will use it in far ranging disbursements to sent to people who want us dead (internal and external enemies of this country) and also giving it to people who despise this country and wish to see it reduced to third world status.
...Kaarma, his partner Janelle Pflager and their 10-month-old baby....

What is it with people who cannot be bothered getting married but want to act married?
seems like this is another prosecutor over reach case. The prosecutors want to “send a message” AGAINST individualism.
IF this was indeed a trespass and this person was trespassing in the garage, there is no duty to retreat for the home resident. (home is castle)
Prosecutors who bring frivolous anti-self defense make example cases should be disbarred.
So if you accidentally leave your garage door open it’s not a crime to shoot them...
If you intentionally leave your garage door open and shoot them, it’s a crime?
