UCLA Rejects $3M Gift From Donald Sterling For Kidney Research

WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Researchers at UCLA will return a portion of a $3 million pledge that Clippers owner Donald Sterling made to support kidney research, school officials announced Tuesday.

The university is returning the initial $425,000 payment from the Donald T. Sterling Foundation made earlier this month, and will not accept the balance of the money, calling the comments he made in a recorded conversation “divisive and hurtful,” according to spokesperson Phil Hampton.

Dr. Ira Kurtz, a professor of medicine in UCLA’s Division of Nephrology was awarded the gift earlier this month to fund research on the structural properties of key proteins in the kidney that affect its function in health and disease.

KNX 1070′s Ed Mertz reports the project’s ultimate goal is to aid in the development of drugs to treat patients with kidney disorders.

The school issued the following statement: “Mr. Sterling’s divisive and hurtful comments demonstrate that he does not share UCLA’s core values as a public university that fosters diversity, inclusion and respect. For those reasons, UCLA has decided to return Mr. Sterling’s initial payment of $425,000 and reject the remainder of a $3 million pledge he recently made to support basic kidney research by the UCLA Division of Nephrology.”

UCLA officials also addressed inquiries about an advertisement that appeared in Sunday’s Los Angeles Times “falsely suggesting that it was UCLA publicly thanking him for the gift.”

The ad was placed by Sterling, not the university, according to Hampton.

Exactly! Do you really think that someone whose life might potentially be saved by research with this money would say “ OH hell no, Donald Sterling funded this research? Screw that I’ll just die!

Like Paula Deen said throw that (without sin) stone hard enough to kill I guess. Bunch of jackasses think stepping on someone’s neck or purse is going to crush their unpopular thoughts out of their heads. Sometimes I hear the most offensive, gross, cruel words (rap music)invoking violence against women and white people coming from cars at red lights, just booming at earth shattering decibel levels but do I boycott other Motown artists. If this is the way it is going to always roll then maybe I will consider it. This whole episode just shows how caricature this country has become.

Go back and look at the placement of the quotation marks. Being bused was rarestia’s own experience, not that of his grandfather.

Well, they don’t win in the smart department. Give that money to somebody that’s going to use it well. UCLA probably wasn’t.

From what I hear, Fedzilla is more involved in research grants as big Pharma exited a while back. Tangent to this things are going on aka Ezekiel Emanuel wherein the Death Panels are taking effect without that name attached as go-no-go decisions are being made about margins of potential drugs, because they know their will be no margins in a particular one given, and Researchers / PHD's are loosing their jobs.

Granted this guy is a worm, but UCLA thinks 3 mill is chump change with what I outlined as a background? Either they have an endowment that can cover it or someone else will fill pick up this slack, or they have their own brand of hubris...

Like many here I know those effected by kidney disease and to see $ turned away leaves me darn near speechless...

It also just struck me how very convenient that TMZ released the tape just in time to create enough collateral damage so no one would notice the Benghazi email release. Bamster is laughing his ass off. I can hear them right now saying look at them running around again getting all wee weed up and didn’t even notice how we f***** up in Benghazi.

Good for you, Mr. Sterling; and you actually have $500k left over after dealing with the 'holier than thou' National Thugball Association...

I can understand why NY City rejected aid from the Saudi who insulted Jews, though even then I thought they probably should have taken his money and rebuked his comment.

But to turn down $3 million to help kidney disease, because a guy made a racial comment, just seems a lot more petty.

did he murder someone?...no
did he rape someone?...no
this culture of ours....
did he join the thugball culture 'knockout game? No.
we're in a dictatorship and we're not supposed to speak our opinions...

Racism is what we do, not what we think!
Strange, how the extreme race baiters and pimps say stuff like this, and worse, every day, and no one blinks an eye about it. .

It would be more honest to keep the money and kill a few kidney sufferers.

Punishing others instead of the transgressor is a tried and true means of suppression.
It is the source of the word “decimate”.

He said stupid things to a gold digger, he should have known better, but he did not murder anyone..when you go against the liberal mindset this is what happens to you, you lose your job, your dignity, your livelihood

Let's not get carried away. He owned a thugball team as a "trophy" kind of thing, with his spare change.

I'm sure he can find other more politically correct hobbies to entertain himself for the rest of his life.
If he can persuade himself to not allow another skank to pretend to be lovey on account of his personality.

The God of Politically Correct must have a sacrifice every now and then to remind Americans what a horribly racist, homophobic, sexist country we are. (sarcasm)

You forgot the most serious charge.
All non-blacks support and promote keeping blacks in slavery.
All those poor 150-year old veterans of the cotton fields...!

Isn’t there a high rate of kidney disease in black community? this is just stupid

Stupid people do stupid things.

The mean comments are not at the same level of three million dollars donated for Kidney research. I just wonder how many millions Sterling has donated to good causes.
I believe the industrial barons of the 1900's had a pretty rough bark on them too. They were also some of the greatest philanthropists, and created a much of the industrial might of this country.
