Nigel Farage could win a seat at Westminster within weeks after a disgraced Conservative backbencher quit the Commons and forced an unexpected by-election.
In a significant blow to the Tories, Patrick Mercer stepped down as MP for Newark on Tuesday night, only days before he was due to be suspended from Parliament for six months.
His decision comes after a joint investigation by The Telegraph and the BBCs Panorama programme disclosed that Mr Mercer had tabled a series of parliamentary questions and put down a motion after accepting £4,000 from undercover reporters.
David Cameron now faces the prospect of Mr Farage, the UK Independence Party leader, mounting a serious challenge in what was one of the Conservatives safest seats, with a 16,000 majority.
Mr Farage told The Telegraph: Im going to give it very serious consideration. I want to become an MP and I want Ukip to be represented in the Commons.

It is very interesting that coverage of the corrupt MP's resignation (which is itself a huge scandal), has turned so quickly to talking of the by election and the prospect of Farage standing.
Nigel Farage was Ted Cruz before Ted Cruz was Ted Cruz, only in the UK....
!
Interesting turn of events. I hope he wins.
I would miss his antics on in Brussels though. No one could replace him who would do as good a job of mocking the EU Parliament and all it’s absurd decrees.
haha I know what you mean, but consider that he will be in a better position to bring the EU down!
I’m wondering if Farage will go for this. Currently, UKIP members create havoc in the European Parliament. Britain’s current seats are:
Tories 26
UKIP 13
Labour 13
Liberal Dem 11
The election projection is that the Tories are going to lose some, and Labour gain some. The elections are on 22 May, the same day as local elections in England and northern Ireland.
If UKIP could pick up most of the Tory losses, they could become the first party in the EP.
So Farage must balance this with UKIP gaining a single seat in parliament.
Farage will be another Thatcher.
We must provide him with another Reagan
Is there any reason why he cannot be a MP and MEP at the same time?
Wait a minute!,,
I’ve filled out the preliminaries for a natural born US citizen Birth Cert. from Hawaii for him.
And then Iwoke up :^(
Maybe that would make sense, assuming it leads to a role in the gov’t. But I doubt that it will.
Thanks UKrepublican.

That would be an intriguing turn of events.
PMQs with Nigel Farage in the House... This will be fun. :D
UKIP leadership have sold out to some degree, but I have it on a good source that their is a large caucus within the party that we would find a lot of common ground with. If only to destabilize the current establishment (and the EU), we should lend ours support to UKIP at this juncture.
Farage comes off looking tolerant compared with the my-way-or-the-highway leaders and policies of the other parties; it’s a cagey move to draw in defections.
UKIP would struggle to overturn a majority of that size. A serious challenge by Farage could possibly lead to the Conservatives losing that seat, but probably not to him.
I don’t know for sure but I’m guessing not.
