So, a student cut the hands of the police after they responded to the site of the protest for a broken glass door? Must be. "Police" is the only plural noun in the sentence that could possibly be the antecedant for the plural pronoun "their".

Not good. Opens the door for totally controlling speech. Who decides what is hate? Religious speech will be condemned as offensive and hateful .. that is already happening in schools, TV programing and some radio stations. The message becomes edited and may even come with fines or other punishment.
