Tornado on ground north side of Birmingham.
I am about 90 miles east of Jackson in Meridian. Yesterday evening we had the tornado sirens wailing away for about an hour and a half. We experienced mostly strong straight line winds and heavy rains last night. Radar indicated several signatures of tornadoes. I don’t think they touched down in this area. I have not seen the local news this morning so I don’t know the severity of any damage. There were reports of trees down and the roof over the gas pumps of one convenience store collapsed trapping people in cars.
More severe weather is predicted in my area this afternoon.
Even straight line winds can be nasty...a bout with them last July trashed part of the greenhouse I was using...I went out to check out damage to my plants (just after midnight), and tied up a couple that had been blown down (house protected most of them). At sunup, I checked again, and couldn't believe all the broken glass strewn thru the garden and out into the street. I had gone out barefoot in the dark, and couldn't believe I hadn't cut my feet on all the glass. Grace of G-d, and all that.
Hopefully, that system will clear your area over the next day or so...stay safe.
I have been checking the radar at wunderground.com using their wunderMap radar and it does not look like anything is forming up like yesterday - yet. Has been sunny and warm so far today. Keeping fingers crossed that the atmosphere doesn’t get fired up later today and evening.
