President Eisenhower on Stupid Republicans
Laurence M. Vance
April 27, 2014
Regardless of what Republicans say about cutting entitlements, welfare, spending, etc., they will never do it. And they will certainly never end them completely. Indeed, they have not only accepted their existence; they are now big supporters of the welfare state just like the Democrats. I have often mentioned in my articles on Republicans how that the Republican majority in Congress for two years under President Eisenhower could have repealed the New Deal. Because they failed to do so, it was no surprise that the next Republican majority in Congress under Bush would likewise fail.
I recently came across this statement by Eisenhower that relates to this very thing:
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

No Ike, it is the mainstream Republicans who make up the Stupid Party, as Samuel Francis reminded us.
I explain here why I pick on Republicans so much.
they are now big supporters of the welfare state just like the Democrats.

THE whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have the two great typesthe advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called balance or mutual check, in our Constitution. G.K. Chesterton: The Blunders of Our Parties, Illustrated London News, April 19, 1924
Tsk, tsk; it is all in how you go about it.
President Ike was a good guy, but he was a general and not a politician.
Taking apart and discarding those parts of government that are not a part of the enumerated powers granted by the U.S.Constitution, requires superb negotiating skills. Why? Because we’re not really negotiating, we’re downsizing, which means eliminating parts of the Federal government and letting the several states take those powers on.
You do it in such a way that the opposition loves it and supports it and doesn’t realize until later they’ve been screwed.
bump
Just like with Obamacare.....history repeating itself.
That is priceless! Thanks for posting!
I’ll need to research into why President Eisenhower never repealed FDR’s New Deal.
Plus, I’m sad to hear that Eisenhower calls me “stupid” for wanting to abolish Communist-style social welfare programs.
Nancy Pelosi knows full well why they had to have BHO2 run for President: it was to put in place a Democrat in the White House and control the Legislative and Administrative branches of government. They passed-off that Melanisian man from Indonesia as a son of a Kenyan goat herder, which he isn't but it was necessary to get nearly all the Black vote.
She committed treason by going to Hawaii and changing the wording on the eligibility paperwork to get around the Hawaiian Democrat Party's lawyer.
1. Will we slowly decay into a very destitute state but avoid total collapse?
2. Will we slowly decay into a very destitute state and finally collapse?
3. Will we quickly and suddenly collapse?
It's a sad situation because eventually the system is going to collapse. Way too many people on the dole.
It's human nature that when something is handed to you, you want it for the rest of your life and if somebody tries to take it away, they are a heartless bastard. A few times in my life, a friend or family member fell on hard times and either got a loan from me or I gave them a place to stay. I never once got a loan repaid and each time I brought somebody into my house (always under the premise it would be for a week or two), it was hell to get them back out on their own again.
One time, I ended up having somebody board with me for nearly a year after we took her in when she left her husband. It was only supposed to be for about a month so she could get her own place. But she got nice and comfortable and always told us she was "a month away" from getting her own place. Meanwhile, she took over our family room and had all her junk all over the house.
Eventually we forced the issue and she thought we were the most horrible people in the world.
Republicans lost that majority pretty quickly, and didn’t get it back for 40 years. That would happen again if Republicans adopt Barry’s Marxist programs.
You’re right. Ike is right in that it is hard to take away the goodies. Ike is wrong in thinking it’s impossible. You just have to do it in such a way that the least harm alternative looks good.
It's very simple. Eisenhower was NOT a conservative on domestic issues. Eisenhower never opposed the New Deal and liked Roosevelt personally. The two had met head to head and communicated by other means quite a number of times, as Roosevelt was General Eisenhower's commander-in-chief when Eisenhower had command of all Allied forces in Europe during WWII.
Eisenhower was publicly apolitical, as career military officers were traditionally trained to be, up until 1952, when he announced as a Republican candidate for President. Until then, there was speculation that he might run as a Democrat.
