The $300 million payout from tech giants like Google and Apple to settle a lawsuit brought by employees makes it clear that Silicon Valley is out for profit, not to change the world.
Silicon Valleys biggest namesGoogle, Apple, Intel and Adobereached a settlement today in a contentious $3 billion anti-trust suit brought by workers who accused the tech giants of secretly colluding to not recruit each others employees. The workers won, but not much, receiving only a rumored $300 million, a small fraction of the billions the companies might have been forced to pay had they been found guilty in a trial verdict.

In terms of dealing with talent, collusion is not the only way the Valley oligarchs work to keep wages down. Another technique is the outsourcing of labor to lower paid foreign workers, the so called techno-coolies. The tech giants claim that they hire cheap workers overseas because of a critical shortage of skilled computer workers but that doesn't hold up to serious scrutiny. A 2013 report from the labor-aligned Economic Policy Institute found that the country is producing 50% more IT professionals per year than are being employed. Tech firms, notes EPI, would rather hire guest workers who now account for one-third to one half of all new IT job holders, largely to maintain both a lower cost and a more pliant workforce.
Some of this also reflects a preference for hiring younger employees at the expense of older software and engineering workers, many of whom own homes and have families in the area.
Either you are Joel Kotkin, or you just stole his work.

There are two disturbing trends in hitech industries. One you covered called “techno coolie”. I like that term and will use it for future articles on this subject. The other thing hi tech companies are doing is hiring college grads for their tech marketing. They base it on looks. If you possess a personality and look that projects hip image hitech companies want, you will be the few American tech grads that will be hired. You do not have to be the best and brightest, you need to possess the look and mannerism desired by the company. Now you have to audition like a movie star or model. Imagine what this high tech future has turned into, an employment nightmare for Americans.
That is why I like TX. You can be ugly as sin and dress like a nerd, but if you can weld and do a good job, you are hired.
One of my recent posting I had a spat with a high tech freeper who must be HR for high tech. Claims “techno coolies” are a myth and our colleges graduate garbage and his best candidate was a Chicom. I should have dared him to put that in writing and send it to MIT and Cal Tech, as well as many prestiges high tech colleges in the US.

What are you talking about? I posted an excerpt of a Joel Kotkin article from the Daily Beast. That's how FR works.
I think your problem is that you failed to include the URL, making it look like a vanity.
I got it now. The link to the Daily Beast disappeared - http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/04/25/silicon-valley-s-giants-are-just-gilded-age-tycoons-in-techno-utopian-clothes.html
Thanks for the link. Maybe the AM can fix this up for us.
And thanks for letting me snark. I’m in a very snarky mood today.
Instead of giving The Daily Beast the clicks why not go dirfectly to Joel Kotkins wonderful site New Geography and let him get the clicks directly. http://www.newgeography.com/
Funny that Kotkin would complain about tech outsourcing so disparagingly.
He was one of the big cheerleaders for it 20 years ago.
Now that he sees the reality, maybe he’s had a change of heart?
Or just trying to bury his complicity.
Wasn’t like people didn’t warn him back then.
