TV adventurer Bear Grylls has signed a £1million book deal for a series of novels inspired by the secret wartime exploits of his grandfather.
The explorer hopes the trilogy of stories about a fictional former Special Forces soldier called Dan Ranger will resonate with fans of classic spy thrillers.
Grylls, 39, who is Britains Chief Scout, said: I think adventure literature is ripe for a makeover!
It is all about taking the reader on an incredible adventure and always surprising them just when they think they know where the plot is leading them.
The father-of-three, whose TV credits include the hit series Born Survivor, was inspired to put pen to paper when he began studying forgotten family files which detailed the work of his late grandfather, Brigadier Ted Grylls.
Brig Grylls was part of a crack unit tasked with capturing Nazi scientists and their secrets before they fell into the hands of Stalins Red Army at the end of the Second World War.
Even at the 11th hour, Hitler hoped his scientists could secure victory with a new range of intercontinental ballistic missiles able to deliver nerve gas to American cities.
Government files declassified in 2006 revealed that such special units helped to ensure more than 1,500 German scientists were transported to Britain and America after 1945.

Man vs. Wild was a great show until Grills did a brokeback
mountain parody with Jake Gyllenhaal in Iceland. Of all the
people to have as a guest.
His grandfather would probably kick his butt for taking wildly dangerous and unnecessary risks.
I’m gonna jump across this 200 foot deep chasm and hope to catch that tree on the other side. If I fail I’ll die but if I succeed it will save me 20 minutes of walking.
If I was going to get stuck in the wilderness with one of these guys I’d rather get stuck with Les Stroud.
Ooooh .... love Les Stroud. I like it that he films himself. I think his experiences are a better reflection of what is likely to really happen ... certainly more so than Bear & even Dual Survival which I also like; however, Cody (again the more ‘realistic’ of the dual situation IMO) got fired so that’s a bummer.
In a wilderness survival scenario you don’t attack nature is if it were an enemy. Nature simply doesn’t care and you’ll lose anyway.
Better to take what the wilderness throws as you and roll with it.
He was on a mountain with a narrow canyon leading down. He said sometimes it saves time to run, and he went downhill at top speed in grass and rocks. How much time do you save with a snapped ankle?
Better to take what the wilderness throws as you and roll with it.

Which doesn’t make for good TV ..... thus the “drama”. Having dealt with some gnarly conditions/situations in the ‘back country’ & far from help, what the normal person might think ‘survival’ is all about from watching these shows might not reflect their reality if they get in trouble.
No kidding, he was an example of what NOT to do when a twisted ankle means certain death.
What a flake he is.
