In the Overtime segment of his show, Bill Maher clashed with Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon over Ukraine. Maher said the U.S. should respond to Russia shutting down talks “by not giving a shit” and mockingly continued, “I’m sorry, let’s go have World War III over Crimea.”
Avlon argued that just because America has a “foreign war hangover” it doesn’t mean the U.S. doesn’t have to care about what Vladimir Putin is doing. He called Putin a bully that will only stop “when someone stands up to him.”
Maher asked, then, what exactly President Obama‘s supposed to do, calling out Republicans for criticizing Obama every which way on Ukraine but “they never say quite what Obama should do.” He said, “If you’re not suggesting we should go to war or send troops, what are you saying?”
Avlon pointed to U.S. troop exercises in Poland as a start, and lamented how the international community lacks the ability to coalesce around Putin and stop him from trying to “reassert the borders of the USSR.”
It’s not what Obama should do NOW, but what he should have done THEN.
Then being not canceling the missile shield in Eastern Europe, not announcing we are discontinuing production of the Hellfire and Tomahawk missiles, not agreeing to reduce our nuclear stockpile, not appointing a succession of incompetent windbags as Secretary of State and not turning our military into an “all things gay are great” zone.
Not much he can do now.
Respond strongly but not directly but not directly by attacking Iran.
Since obozo is all about throwing away leverage, being a selfish weakling, downsizing military assets etc there isn’t a whole hell of a lot he can do...except get spanked and like it or start a war.
If you don’t scare ANYONE there is a good chance you’re going to have to fight or sit down and STFU.
Exactly right. Many republicans were against all of these things. Trouble is, the Boy Genius knows better than everyone else. He got himself into a quagmire and NOW the republicans are supposed to give him advice?
Do we need 5000 nuke warheads and 6000 delivery systems? Or double that number.
Over and Over I keep seeing the freepers and the GOP saying that Obama is destroying America because he negotiated and the Senate ratified START.
Make that the first thing on your list. You, McCain and the NeoCons tell us how many nukes we need. Next, how many aircraft carrier battle groups do we need. And so forth.

I asked the same question repeatedly about Iraq. The answer usually boiled down to “let the hajis win.”
I don’t think so.
I don’t think we should go to war with Russia over this, and I’m far from being an expert in international relations and the available tools a nation uses to bend others to its will, but I’m pretty sure “nothing but talk” is not a good use of influence.
