WASHINGTON Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens says he thinks the federal government should legalize marijuana.
The 94-year-old retired justice tells NPR that public opinion has changed on the issue.
Stevens also says that there isn't much distinction between marijuana and alcoholic beverages.

John Paul Stevens should not open his mouth if he does not know what it is he is saying. There are huge and significant differences between alcoholic beverages and marijuana, so many that they cannot be compared.
There are many varieties of alcoholic beverages with a long history of use, thousands of years. Permanent and short term effects are well known, as well as the dangers of excessive consumption.
What are known about the carcinogens, permanent brain alteration, psychotic drug effects, memory loss, and other deleterious effects of marijuana use, are being suppressed or ignored so as not to stop the juggernaut of stupidly legalizing its use.
Already in Colorado there are increases in auto accidents, deaths, hospitalizations, bad effects on children, and maybe an overall dumbing down of the population. We are not living in rationale times.
Get real, it’s one of the most studied substances on the planet. Have a drink and lighten up.
Nope, Earl Warren.
You are correct; the “need” for the militarized police, or the present justification for them, would go away. But the police themselves would not, and a new justification for their existence would be created.
In fact, the “war on drugs” is in itself proof of this. While marijuana had been illegal before 1935, there had not been much effort to enforce any of the laws. In 1935, all of that changed and the “war on drugs began in earnest. Why then? Because between 1922 and 1933 armies of police had been hired to enforce Prohibition. But in 1933, that justification for their existence was eliminated. The officers needed something to do so “Reefer Madness” was filmed, and the rest is history.
If drugs were decriminalized, about 98% of the militarized police force would no longer be needed.

Those fedcoats are not about the “war” on drugs.
Yeah - I overlooked "Earl The Pearl".
Stevens moves to "Second Worse".
At 94 he is still making stupid statements. At least this one does haven’t the effect of law
Stevens is apparently in some sort of competition with John McCain and Bob Dole to see who can make the highest number of inane dementia-driven comments in their remaining time on Earth.
obviously they never read psych college texts that always say it is a bad idea. LIB texts at that.
LOL! I never thought of it that way, but yes, they’re in a sort of Geriatric Stupidity Olympics.
This is for people who want to get high? I understand the medical part, but for healthy people to smoke weed to feel better amazes me.

Why ?? almost all mammals do it to some extent... birds too .. they seek out naturally fermented berries, psychedelic fungi and such ... I don’t smoke but if it was legal I would cook with it ,, I don’t need the tar and crap in my lungs ... alcohol even in small quantities makes it hard for me to sleep...
The war on drugs is about power and control.. lets release non-violent drug offenders so they can go out get a job and build our economy.
And, of course, the prison would empty out so much you could probably put prisoners one to a cell so they wouldn’t beat the crap out of each other or do unmentionable things to each other after lights out.
Then you could put more violent thugs in jail, rather than giving them probation.
You would have to be careful with the weed, however. It is a lot more potent than it used to be. One brownie in 2014 might be equal to 10 brownies back in the 1970s.
Thanks for the ping!
The war on drugs is a complete waste of time and money.
And waste of money.
That is the most absurd statement I’ve ever seen on FR. TROLL?
*******************
Absurd? What’s absurd is the idea that we can ruin peoples lives for attending a party where they smoke a bit of weed. What’s absurd is that we have an armed police force and the largest prison system on the planet which is geared toward jailing people for decades over minor infractions...
