A Russian intelligence-gathering ship has been operating off the U.S. East Coast and near the Gulf of Mexico for the past month, the Pentagon said Thursday.
We are aware that the Russian ships Viktor Leonov and Nikolay Chiker are currently operating in waters that are beyond U.S. territorial seas but near Cuba, said Lt. Col. Tom Crosson, a Pentagon spokesman. We respect the freedom of all nations, as reflected in international law, to operate military vessels beyond the territorial seas of other nations.
The Leonov is an intelligence gathering ship outfitted with high-tech electronic spying gear. The Chiker is an ocean-going naval tug that has been accompanying the spy ship on its mission.

Just wait until they start flying drones over America...
They still got those missile bases in Cuba?
Yet, some here opposed the US ship operating in the Black Sea. They considered it an unwarranted affront and provocation to Putin.
Sink the sob’s!
I’m sure Ivan would much rather be sailing off Cuba than off Vladivostok.
Bringing a tugboat with a spy ship is like having a buddy with a tow truck along, in case the car needs a tow.
They can spy on the Miami Marlins all they want: there’s no intelligence in that organization.
The Mongoloids are also reeling, drunk, on their last legs, homophobe, demon worshiping, retrograde and not welcome in polite transnational society anymore. So I am informed.
And Russia flew a SCHEDULED spy flight over America recently.
Obama is behaving more and more like Hugo Chavez every day.
Why are they lingering off the coast? Obama would invite them in and give them free access to our most top secret material if they would only ask.
So? We do it to them also, intelligence gathering on both sides have been going on forever, and always will.
Hell our own allies would do it to us as well, there are no real friends in that business, only mutual assistance partners willing to share.
From some searching, it seems the Viktor Leonov showed up in Cuba in Late Feb. with no explanation.
Was supposedly refitted with new gear about three years ago.
There really are few real secrets these days anyway.
I guess that’s a bit less subtle than the Russian “trawlers” we used to see off the Pacific coast.
So if we're in the Black Sea, why be so upset when the Russians return the favor?
At the very least they scraped off the rust...
