He is just working with some very basic arithmetic. If all Latino immigration, legal and illegal, were to end tonight at midnight, the United States would still wind up with a majority Latino population sometime in the 21st Century. That's not an "if." That's a "when." He is also teaching us a basic fact. That is, with the advantage of great, sudden numbers on their side, there is no reason for Latinos to integrate into a culture they do not wish to share except for its material benefits. That would be basic human nature.
Immigration control is crucial in order to give us at least some slight arithmetical chance of integrating and “Americanizing” the Latinos, as we did with the Irish, Italians, and Poles. The difference is that our prior waves of immigration , in retrospect sort of dribbled in from places one could not walk to and numbered in the millions, not the many tens of millions who have arrived in a huge mass since 1965. Previous immigration took place on a manageable scale, was somewhat controllable, and was nothing like the mess on hand now.
E.G., the number of ILLEGAL immigrants present since 1965 far outnumbers the legal immigration of the previous 100 years. Furthermore, because of Affirmative Action, the offspring of illegal immigrants easily achieve positions of dominance over the rest of us, e.g., Prof Truxillo of the Chicano Studies Department. Perhaps the African-Americans might wake up to this before it’s too late to balance things out? They are even facing Latino competition over at the Welfare Department as not only do the Latinos qualify for more freebiegoodies, but also take the Welfare Establishment jobs that were an African-American prerogative for decades.
“It just really didn’t make any sense to me because I had gone to high school and lived in North Carolina since I was 3 years old,” Cervantes said.
