GOP Scrambles To Condemn Rancher's Remarks on Race

Republicans – including possible 2016 candidate Rand Paul -- are scrambling to distance themselves from defiant Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy after he made startling comments about slavery and African-Americans in a New York Times article published Wednesday night.

From the Times’ Adam Nagourney:

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Bundy had previously drawn support from some GOP lawmakers for his clash with the Bureau of Land Management.

[snip]

In statements after Bundy’s remarks, both Paul and Heller condemned his comments.

"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him,” said Paul.

And a spokesman for Heller told the Times that the senator “completely disagrees with Mr. Bundy’s appalling and racist statements, and condemns them in the most strenuous way.”

I cannot get behind this. We need to find another cause, the BLM and all the other agencies will certainly overstep (with lots of military-style hardware) again.

Good luck with finding the perfect cause with the perfect spokesman.

You're letting the leftist set the agenda if you bail out that easily, especially with the New York Times involved.

Really? Then perhaps you’ll explain why so many of them returned to the plantation life under their former owners, after the War?

I reject your premise. I'm sure there were many 'good' slave owners who kept their slave families intact. But I can't believe you are a supporter of slavery. Slavery is a crime against humanity. It is the antithesis of American values.

Mostly because they didn't know anything else, or where else to go. But a generation or two later, they were leaving by the millions in the Great Migration.

In other words, the GOP will defend your property rights, as long as you don't say anything controversial?

The Branch Davidians were clearly nutcases and worse, but that didn't give Federal goons the right to incinerate them. Randy Weaver sounded out there on a lot of issues, but that doesn't mean that his family members deserved to be shot. Bundy's views on slavery and race may not be politically acceptable either, but that doesn't give FedGov any more right to rob him of his land and livelihood.

Your statement >>Where he is dead wrong is his belief that slaves had a family life. << indicates there was no family life for the slaves.

Now you’ve changed your song. >> I’m sure there were many ‘good’ slave owners who kept their slave families intact. <<

Make up your mind which side of the fence you’re on.

this is the problem…..intellectual disconnect at times……how can he miss the real story, which is the BLM, NOT Cliven Bundy. Bundy cannot tax anyone, cannot throw anyone in jail, cannot arrest anyone, cannot tie anyone else up in red tape, etc.

WTF Up Glenn

Gov. Rick Perry had one of the BEST responses to this Bundy incident. That is - he didn't get side tracked with Bundy at all. He stayed focused on the reall issue.

Rick Perry Dismisses Nevada Rancher's Racist Remarks
Business Insider ^ | 04/24/2014 | Hunter Walker

In an interview with CBS This Morning Thursday, Texas Governor Rick Perry discussed the situation at the Bundy Ranch in Nevada and racist comments made by the man at the center of the recent standoff there, rancher Cliven Bundy. Perry said Bundy's remarks were a "side issue" and pointed to a land dispute in Texas with the same federal agency Bundy battled in Nevada, the Bureau of Land Management.

"I don’t know what he said but the fact is Cliven Bundy is a side issue here compared to what we’re looking at in the state of Texas," Perry said. "He is an individual—deal with his issues as you may. What we have in the state of Texas, I don’t get distracted about, is the federal government is coming in and attempting, from our perspective, to take over private property. And you must—f this country’s to stay the land of freedom and liberty, private property rights must be respected."

why anyone would be so stupid as to worry about whether Bundy is pure as the wind driven snow is just beyond me….this is all really easy to understand…and yet…..some can’t.

Perry does. But even in Nevada, it’s not about Bundy per se.

La Raza Rick gets it right, much of the time. If he’d just stop sidling up to Juan McShamnesty’s amigo’s, he’d be much better off.

Make up your mind which side of the fence you're on.

I have not changed my position. Slavery is wrong. All the time. It is the antithesis of the American experiment, where All men are created Equal and endowed by our creator with unalienable rights. There may have been 'good' slaveholders that kept families together, didn't rape the women or sell family members. But Slavery is evil in every case. Some slaveowners may have just been less evil than others.

Bundy is saying the same thing I’ve heard Professor Walter Williams say many times. Thomas Sowell also. And Allen West and Clarence Thomas and Armstrong Williams, etc.

I guess they’re all racist.
