Hayes remembered as pioneer who declared San Jose "feminist Capitol of the world"
San Jose is remembering its first female mayor.
Janet Gray Hayes died Monday at a retirement home in Saratoga. Her family says she suffered a stroke over the weekend.
Hayes was elected mayor of San Jose in 1974, becoming the first woman in the United States to lead a city of more than 500,000 people.
She was a trailblazer who helped open the door for women to serve their communities in public office, Rep. Zoe Lofgren said in a statement. She was the one who declared San Jose to be the 'feminist Capitol of the world' when she led San Jose as its Mayor, with a female majority city council and a new female majority on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors."
Bill Targets "Lingering Third-Hand Smoke" All flags at San Jose city facilities were lowered to half-mast on Tuesday in memory of the former mayor.
Hayes was 87 years old.
No mention of any accomplishments, besides having sweater decorations.
"Holding the door open" is not an accomplishment.
Epitaph.
She knew the way.
Janet was one of the worst mayors San Jose ever had
RIP.
Has San Jose even had a good Mayor in the past 50 years ? As far as I can tell, they’ve all been ultra-leftist Democrats.
i had forgotten all about her until i heard the news of her passing yesterday... i felt nostalgic thinking back to the early 70s and my wonderful childhood in San Jose...
Having lived under this person......nothing but crap and over regulations .
do you think she was worse than Ron Gonzales?

What a nice lady.
Rest in Peace....
Chuck’s been a fairly down the middle mayor and a good one.
As were TomMcHenry and Susan Hammer.
I really liked Ron but....he became a putz mayor ....
Chuck Reed was passable
Notice I said one of
Ron is the worst
I have lived in San Jose since 1967 and no, we haven’t had a good mayor ever.
i certainly did notice... was it wrong to ask you if you thought Ron was worse? i figured you probably thought he was one of the worst... but i wondered where you put him in the group of the worst... worse than Janet or not? of course, i did not know, so i asked... i had a feeling you might take offense to my question, but i had hoped you would not... my question should not have made you think that i did not notice you said “one of the worst...” i was very careful in my wording, because i did not want you to think that i thought you had not considered Ron Gonzales... i assumed you had...
I answered your question
