U.S. Army paratroopers are arriving in Poland to begin a series of military exercises in four countries across Eastern Europe to bolster allies in the wake of Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula last month.
Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said Tuesday that the exercises will last about a month, and initially involve about 600 troops.
An Army company of about 150 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy, will start the exercises Wednesday in Poland. Additional Army companies will head to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and are expected to arrive by Monday for similar land-based exercises in those countries.
Under the current plan, U.S. troops would rotate in and out of the four countries for additional exercises on a recurring basis.

I pray they dont get diverted to the Ukraine.
Wasting our troops yet again. Way to go Obama, you ass.
Ping.
Active Duty ping.
This is a very very very clever plan by Obama...
This could cause Putin to laugh himself to death....
Isn’t this similar to how both Korea and Viet Nam started; by just “sticking our toe in” and eventually being in up to our necks.........and didn’t BOTH of them happen under democrat regimes?
600 troops huh? That should really scare the heck out of Russia.
Amazing. Cheney said “0 is dithering”, and within a week the troops are tripled in Afghan. Now, Brooks of WaPo says “O is dithering”, and within the week, we’ve got troops headed for Eastern Europe.
Too bad the last US tank left Europe not long ago and six hundred troops are a drop in the bucket compared to the Russian maneuvers, but Barry still looks rough and tough doesn't he?
Not too long ago, it would be the US that would send an entire division while the smaller countries would send a company. Now it is the US that is sending just a company.
JFK put 16,000 troops in Vietnam, that is how that started for us.
In Korea the North invaded.
Obama is too libertarian on foreign policy and national defense to do anything in Europe.
Yeah, I’m sure Putin is really, really scared now. That’s the problem with leftists like our beloved president. They think that all opponents can be treated like they treat conservatives. We generally respect the law and orderly processes for resolving conflict. The left takes advantage of that even though it has zero respect for the law and breaks it whenever it’s convenient.
The left, however, is absolutely impotent against someone like Putin who doesn’t care what the “civilized” west thinks of him. Calling Putin a racist or a bigot or a homophobe or a warmonger or a misogynist—all of the labels the left likes to use to demonize opponents and win public opinion in the west—won’t stop Putin. In fact, he probably gets a kick out of it.
I don’t know about Korea, but I believe Vietnam took a long time before we put a lot of men there. At first, it was the French who were involved in ‘advising’ South Vietnam on how to handle what we now call ‘insurgents’ into their territory. I think the NATO aggreements of that day, obligated the United States to become more active in the resistance. I do know that the sooner all Americans are out of Afghanistan the better. Containment vs obliteration, may be our best option.
Agreed. Putin do what he thinks best for his country’s interests there. He might go do far as to try to avoid bombing the 600 American troops ( display hostages) , but that’s about it. 600 men couldn’t possibly do anything significant to stop the Russian army anyway. It’s a joke. Only fir show. I’d feel rotten if I were a soldier given orders to go play warrior in Poland under these farcical conditions.
They should leave this to NATO - I’m sorry if it offends but stuff the EU and the Europeans they have done nothing but give the USA crap for the past 20 years. They are so superior, looking down their noses at you guys until they actually have to do some of the dirty work!
So this “exercise” will be lasting at least 7 months? Sounds like a deployment to me. The 173rd is set up shop in eastern europe.

It talks about the Russian situation relative to Poland
Oh come on.
Historically Russia has ALWAYS FAILED to successfully invade Poland when Russia did NOT have Germany’s help. When Russia tried to invade Poland back in 1919 when it did not have Germany’s help.....INITIALLY Russia was able to get its forces into Poland.....but THEN afterwards the Poles were able to repel the Russian forces back to Moscow.
The ONLY times Russia was able to invade and MAINTAIN an invasion force in Poland was in 1795 and 1939 WHEN Russia HAD GERMANY’S HELP. As LONG as Germany STAYS OUT OF POLAND.....Russia will STRUGGLE to MAINTAIN any kind of invasion force in Poland for any significant time in today’s 2014.
Lets NOT forget....that when Russia was GOOD FRIENDS with Nazi Germany in 1939 and signed the FRIENDSHIP Russia-Nazi Germany Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with Nazi Germany to SIMULTANEOUSLY start WWII TOGETHER by invading Poland TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME on Sept 1, 1939......Unbeknownst to Russia’s GOOD FRIEND GERMANY in 1939....Russia FIRST WAITED to invade Poland on Sept 17, 1939.... ONLY after seeing if Nazi Germany could FIRST get the upper hand on Poland.....being Mindful that Poland Beat Russian forces back to Moscow in 1919 when Russia invaded Poland WITHOUT German HELP. Russia WAITED to make sure that Germany could get the upper hand on Polish forces....because Russia WAS still afraid of what the Poles could do to Russia when Russia did NOT have the Germans HELPING Russia to hold down the Poles.
History shows that Russia is always hesitant to invade Poland when Russia knows Germany isn’t helping Russia to invade Poland.
