I guess that depends on what you believe what is meant by justice. For me, justice is a systematic tool for society to enact a level of punishment that is approximately equal to,the crime committed. I do not define justice as exacting as much punishment as possible from those duly convicted. I do not believe, as you seem to, that prisoners should be screaming in their cots at night over the horrors inflicted upon them during the day.

If that’s what the majority of Freepers believe, you’re right I probably don’t belong here. But it would seem to me that anybody who believes that prisoners should be subjected to Dante’s seven levels of hell probably aren’t fit for society in general.

For me, it depends on both the crime and the criminal. Someone in prison for fighting the IRS certainly don't merit harsh punishment which begs the question of why they were imprisoned in the first place. But for pedophiles, the skies the limit in my book. Likewise, criminal invaders (or euphemistically, "illegal aliens") should be subjected to harsh, painful punishment just shy of cruel and unusual. IMHO, of course.

Prisoners in US prisons are probably more coddeled than those in other countries. Weight rooms, TV, a/c and heating, meals, showers, clean clothes, medical care, religious services, etc. ...A portion of recidivism in the US is due to released criminals committing another crime so they can return to prison where all their needs to survive are met.

I’m guessing that you are opposed to enhanced interrogation of terriorists, too, since you seem to think that incarceration in a US prison is akin to Dante’s Inferno.

I have NEVER heard of a case of someone ‘screaming at night in the cots’.....Your hyperbole is too much. You seem to avoid the fact that FELONS are in PRISON for doing bad things. Taking my property, threatening me with a weapon, killing people are not behaviors I want to encourage in any form.

You of course don’t mention the fact that prisoners can get their education on my dime if they so desire. They get medical care that I pay for. They eat on my dime. The fact that tax payers foot the bill to feed, house, cloth, and care fore these miscreants seems to not be part of your thought process. They should not be given prevailing wages or anything like it unless you want them to pay for their entire stay at full cost.
