We are pretty familiar with this story: A perfectly sensible if slightly boring idea is walking down the street. Suddenly, the ideological circus descends, burying the sensible idea in hysterical claims and fevered accusations. The ideas political backers beat a craven retreat. The idea dies.
This is what seems to be happening to the Common Core education standards, which are being attacked on the right because they are common and on the left because they are core.
About seven years ago, it was widely acknowledged that state education standards were a complete mess. Huge numbers of students were graduating from high school unprepared either for college work or modern employment. A student who was rated proficient in one state would be rated below basic in another. About 14 states had pretty good standards, according to studies at the time, but the rest had standards that were verbose, lax or wildly confusing.
The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers set out to draft clearer, consistent and more rigorous standards. Remember, school standards are not curricula. They do not determine what students read or how teachers should teach. They are the goals for what students should know at the end of each grade....

Commie corps.
So very, very true.
He could take Steven Colbert’s place.
You should be on the payroll, if FR HAD a payroll. :-) You post many of the best articles.
Now I know why the NYT has hired Brooks as their “house conservative” - he is a moron. Actually, I knew this a long time ago; he is even more stupid than E.J. Dionne.
Common Core ping
Time to get the Fed govt out of local school life.
The Common Core is anti-Torah at its core. Therefore it is rotten to the core. Rotting, as something that is dead is rotten. It masquerades as an earnest attempt to improve Americas pedagogic performance. In reality it destroys the creative wellsprings of the Western Tradition: the Judeo-Christian world view, built, however imperfectly, on the foundation of the Torah Ethic. Common Core was created by people who do not have that understanding of life. Their world view could not and did not bring forth the greatness of America. All they can do is deny the Ethic that gave our nation its birth, co-opt its life force, and then declare that it was Their world view that that did it in the first place. If this is OK with David Brooks it is because he does not know G-d and has no respect for his Torah.
“A student who was rated proficient in one state would be rated below basic in another”
In Brooks and the GOPe world, states are mere administrative districts of the Federal Government and have no actual powers or purpose. And they should never reflect the desires and needs of their actual constituents. All must be mirror images of all the others.
Well stated. I like your point of view.
This is posted in the NEW YORK Times, does he not realize most High School finals in NY are State Regents exams? ALL NY kids take the same finals— therefore what is taught throughout the state, in every school district, needs to follow the same curriculum! In NY state common core is not just a bunch of goals a teacher should strive for, teachers must teach for tests they don’t create and hope they have covered all of the material. Your class doesn’t finish the book in time? To bad, they will be tested on it. Got a really bad teacher? To bad you take the same test the teacher of the year’s students take.
David Brooks....another clown. Just watched an old video of him on YouTube....He was apparently still a college student appearing on a round table discussion with the esteemed economist Milton Friedman.
The most memorable moment...this must have been from the early 1980s...was when Brooks gave creedence to some kind of central planning or government control idea....and Milton Friedman shredded his argument.
Seeing what Brooks has become, with his Obama “perfect crease in his pant leg” worship of Obama, it seems as though Brooks has always been a closet liberal.
I wonder if David “Perfect Crease in Obama’s Pant Leg” Brooks has seen “Building the Machine”.
FREEPers should watch it too:

???????
Common core is the symptom. The NEA and AFT is the disease.
Labor unions masquerading as student advocates have brought education to indoctrination.
