I heard a rumor that some sensitive folks on the religious right are concerned about the possibility of the GOP 2016 convention being held in my beloved hometown, that den of iniquity known as Las Vegas. I have to admit, Im puzzled. Sure, theres sin in Vegas, but last time I checked, there was sin in Dallas, Cleveland and even (gasp) River City. Believe it or not, there are hundreds of churches and hundreds of thousands of Christians in Vegas. We can and DO live the same lives people live anywhere. We work, go to school and church, take our kids to ballet and baseball, and live in actual houses. Concerned about the direction our country has taken, were doing all we can to reverse the trend.
So our billboards are a little racier than those in some other cities. That doesnt mean everyone is a stripper. In fact, we in Vegas use those billboards as an educational opportunity to teach our kids about photoshop. And dont worry about those innocent looking girls pictured on the direct to you ?iers. Theyve never even been to Vegas.
It seems to me that holding a convention in a town with predictable weather, excellent transportation, affordable accommodations, not to mention world class restaurants and entertainment, IS a conservative value. Why would anyone want to go to another city where you spend far more money than you have to, half your time just trying to reach the venue, or where you cant get a pizza after 10 PM? Ive been to many convention cities where those are real issues, and major inconveniences.
The objections voiced in a letter to RNC Chairman Reince Preibus, even though they were voiced by some people and organizations I truly respect, were a bit of a stretch. Merely visiting a town where sin is present does not make one a sinner. All you have to do is wake up each day, even in your own bed, and youre bound to sin.
Sure, the liberal press will be hiding behind every neon sign, trying to get that incriminating photo of a family values conservative, drunk and wearing an Elvis wig. Vigilance is the order of the day. So if you feel your spiritual weakness might cause you the loss of your sanity, family or career during your short stay in Sin City, I recommend the following:
1. Room with an accountability partner.
2. Have the adult channel turned off in your room.
3. Dont dine alone with a colleague of either sex. Dine and travel to the venue only in groups.
4. If you cant resist the lure of a beckoning slot machine or gaming table, walk very fast through the casino. Most of them have clear walking paths, so you can avoid the snare.
5. In other words, dont give the devil a foothold, like you shouldnt in any city.
In the ancient world, respectable people, (the kind Jesus tended to avoid), were forced to pass by prostitutes and other disreputable people every day. Somehow some of them managed to follow at least a few of the Ten Commandments every day. Its insulting to the incredible people who live and work in Vegas to behave as if were beneath your presence. What does it say about a Christians spiritual strength if he or she cant handle a few days in Vegas without going off the rails? And by the way, no matter where the convention is held, I can assure, you, hookers have frequent ?ier miles they WILL use to get there. If theres a market, it will be served. Grow up.
We are commanded to be in but not of, and that includes convention locations. Shame on those of you who would write off an entire city. I assume that in the future, youll all return any donation checks postmarked Vegas? And you certainly wont take advantage of any political gain you receive via donations from Sheldon Adelson, right?
The GOP has a bit of an image problem. As a social and fiscal conservative, Ive spent 15 years on air defending traditional values, and trying to dispel the myth that conservatives arent stuffy and self-righteous. A GOP convention in Vegas would provide an incredible platform to demonstrate that the GOP isnt just a party of people who look down their noses at others. We need to be more welcoming, without sacri?cing our core values.
Jesus went where the sinners were. What city needs to hear the GOP message more than Vegas? To paraphrase the Book of John, Vegas! Can anything good happen there? The answer is a resounding yes.
As a Conservative GOP Christian, I have no problem going to Vegas.
San Fransicko, on the other hand will NEVER get a tourtist dime from me.
Also be sure to pay your grazing fees and and kneel and kiss Harry Reids ring or Metro SWAT will come for you.
Sure. Why not. Now that the NV GOP has removed the traditional marriage and pro-life planks from their platform they are well suited to host the GOPe. What a farce.
Thank you for a great article.
I visited Las Vegas for a convention several years ago. I spent 3 days there, did no gambling, no nudie/girlie shows, just attended the meetings, ate in the casino buffet, and visited the Star Trek Exhibit at the MGM Grand. And found an excellent 1 lb prime rib dinner for $12.99.
I agree. The only time I go to San Francisco, is to fly out of SFO, but I always look at the sky, to see if there is any fire and brimstone getting ready to rain down.
Plus, while there, delegates and their hookers can experience the city’s culture.
Yeah, I wet my pants a little laughing at that one.
What an amazingly tasteless panoramic view.
Thanks Kaslin.
You should have directed the post to JPX2011
Yeah, but those other places were not built with sin as their foundation!
;^)
They need to be sure to invite prostitutes to ply their trade on the convention floor, just to make sure nobody thinks today's GOP has any values.
It’s safe but it’s also disgusting. I know they should not have their convention in Seattle, there it would be dangerous and would cause a riot. I remember when the WTO had their meeting here.
All joking aside, you’re right. Las Vegas, like any other big city, may have good, decent people and decent things to do. But the average tourist has to work awfully hard to avoid the temptations deliberately created by Vegas.
Even if Republicans behave honorably during the convention, they’ll never overcome the image problem that Vegas deliberately cultivates every other week of the year.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas IF you’re a democrat.
Not true if you’re a Republican.
You should know that prostitution is illegal in Clark County.
Who was Clark? The first censured Senator...
Ran unopposed next election and became a senator once again, from Montana. He was a ‘Copper King’ and an interesting guy.
Really? I was at SHOT show in Vegas a few months ago.. The worst temptation I experienced was the great prices at the Clark's shoe store at Fashion Show Mall.
Well, okay, I also saw lots of neat firearms..Briefcase where the handle is a gun, knife which was really a gun, but besides reveling in their awesomeness, I wasn't tempted to go into debt over them.
There are so many neat free things to see in Vegas..just people watching is great fun.
Why would the GOP want have their convention in a city that favors Harry Reid after the BS he has pulled in the Senate?

Agree! Dallas is more centrally located and more accessible to everyone who would attend the convention. Texas is a ‘red’ State, which supports both Conservatives and a lot of the GOP-e.
Las Vegas is probably too tempting for GOP conventioneers not to transgress in ways that the Dems would love to publicize—let alone being Reid and Adelson country.
Texas, on the other hand, is already a red state. Not much to gain from currying favor with voters there.
Sadly, Ohio is the place that makes sense. The boring, industrial, heartland. Has recently voted blue in the presidential, but can be turned. And surrounded by other states that likewise need to be nailed down.
