CHARLESTON, S.C. It didnt take much for Ted Cruz to bring a crowd of conservatives to its feet here.
By the time the Texas Republican senator finished speaking Tuesday night, an adoring audience hailed Cruz and his no-compromise, combative style of conservatism that has made him the scourge of the GOP establishment but a hero of the tea party.
Liberty is under assault today like never before, Cruz said, pacing the stage like a televangelist.
But even in deep-red South Carolina, a well-received speech full of Cruzs signature flair is no guarantee that the firebrand politician could win the early primary state in a run for his partys presidential nomination in 2016.
The Republican Party here, as in many other states, has many factions. And in interviews with activists and GOP leaders across the state, a common theme emerges: Cruz can clearly energize the far right, but he has yet to demonstrate he can pull together the necessary coalition of business-minded Republicans, libertarians, social and fiscal conservatives and moderate-leaning voters who are eager to see a Republican win the White House come 2016.
Electability that will be his challenge, said Republican Lindsey Graham, South Carolinas senior senator. Hes got to show he can put the patchwork together.

It’s not sudden and it should be obvious as to “why”.
How soon they forget that SC went for Newt Gingrich. They will go with Cruz IF he runs
Reagan had about 10 times more, he would have mopped the floor with Gore and Kerry, even with the less friendly demographics that Bush faced.
Pardon me for pinging the linda list to this article.
Goober Graham can take his “electability” and shove it up his arse.
Yes. Politico is plying the frightened preschooler here.
Electability. We have been hearing that from RINO losers for 8 years now. What do they know about “electability”? They have no current success to back up that they are electable. The proof that a RINO is electable is not there. The RINOS have no proof that they are electable. Period.
Just asking. Who would be a great GOP candidate to you? I am trying to find a good one.
I want Ted Cruz!
if he doesn’t run, I probably won’t
vote.
“Rep. Mick Mulvaney said the Texas senator fell flat and missed an opportunity to show he can lead the country and the party out of the political wilderness when he spoke last May in Columbia, S.C., at the Silver Elephant Dinner. It was the same old, same old, said Mulvaney”
I had not seen that quote from Mulvaney before. That’s another disappointment from him, along with recent reports of his willingness to consider illegal invader “legalization” along with Trey Gowdy.
Cruz did the respectable thing and did not stab his fellow senators, so this is how Lindsay-girl pays him back?
I think he is justified now in supporting Grahams primary opponent.
And the news this would generate would help OTHER primary opponents without having to address them specifically
