Gandhi and his actions were the opening shots by the Third World against western world rule. King just brought that battle technique to continental America. They both had the cunning to recognize that Europe was exhausted, in the case of Gandhi, and that the American was trivially tired and simply wanted to play with their recent wealth acquisition, in the case of King and his financial supporters.
