A fight is brewing between American beer makers and the federal government over happy hour ... for cows.
For centuries, brewers have given or sold the leftover grain from the brewing process to local ranchers and dairy farmers for cattle feed. But new regulations proposed by the Food and Drug Administration threaten to end that relationship.
"The whole brewing community was shocked about it," said Josh Deth, co-owner of Revolution Brewing in Chicago, Ill.
Deth, whose title is "Chairman of the Party," says it's always been a great deal for both sides. The ranchers get the grain, and the brewers get those leftovers removed from their facilities for free.
"We're trading, giving something of value to each other and working it out. I think that's one of the really great things, and people really hate to see the government get involved in something where they can just as easily stay out of this."
Under the FDA's proposed regulations, so-called spent grains would be regulated the same as pet food -- meaning brewers would first be required to dry and package the grain without it coming into contact with humans.

I really have to wonder how we survived so long without additional regulation. Well, maybe I don’t. I would be completely happy to go back a 100 or 150 years and deal with the regulations of those days.
It’s a cow. They eat off the ground. Why would we need to sterilize their food ?
Translation - we have to keep coming up with BS laws to justify our existence -- the consequences of our ham-handed stupidity are YOUR problem, suckas.
Non -legislated Laws need to be stifled, with budgetary prejudice.
Too many taxes.
Too many laws.
“The ranchers get the grain, and the brewers get those leftovers removed from their facilities for free.”
And the government can’t make any money on the deal.
This is one of the stupider rules/laws I’ve seen from the FDA in a while. It’s also a good lesson in how the private sector can sometime makes lemons from lemonade if allowed to figure out a solution. There was a similar scenario back in the 1980’s/90’s between film processing companies and plant food makers. One of the biggest waste products of film processing apparently was an essential compound in plant foods (can’t remember what it was). The plant food companies took the waste off the film producer/processors hands and both industries got a sweet deal.
There’s nothing that Obama can’t screw up
This is not a screw up it is an intention effort to put more cattle farmers out of business. Cattle farmers operate on a slim margin, I speak of small cattle farmers as I once was one, that will kill a lot of small family farms.
Similar kind of thing happened when power plants had to start scrubbing their flue gases for sulphur. The byproduct of that is a synthetic gypsum. This stuff is 95% pure and the purity s nearly constant. We figured out we could use it to make sheetrock with some minor modifications to our plants (it is a little denser than natural rock). So now most sheetrock made in the eastern US is made out of coal power plant waste, that used to go straight to the landfill.
The Federal Government is going to regulate us into starvation.
Too many laws.”
Too many bureaucrats
Beg pardon, there's a better way of putting it...
There's nothing that government can't screw up.
Unproductive meddling in the free market, such as this, is hardly a trait exclusive to the Obama administration.
“We’re trading, giving something of value to each other and working it out.”
And that is something the govt just cannot tolerate.
In conjunction with the BLM activities it looks to me as if what the feds want is for EVERYONE (but Emperor O ) to become vegans
Government has the excrement touch, as opposed to the Midas touch...
Since when are feed lot cattle or dairy cattle pets?
There is no market or institution in which the federal government has intervened that has not been damaged irreparably.
If this regulation is passed, it will do tremendous damage to the brewing industry. Most brewers actually sell the spent malt to ranchers as a highly nutritious feed. The money pays for the brewing costs while the ranchers save on the cost of feed. It makes for a perfect system. If the government regulators wanted to ruin a perfect system, this would be it.
