A subspecies is not endangered if the species exists in numbers elsewhere. The subspecies is unfit to survive in it’s radically evolved form
alas.... I must confess, I killed a yellow billed cuckoo once.
It flew in front of my truck and was struck. I identified it by the distinctive large white spots on the tail as it was knocked up and over the hood.
Feeling bad about it, I later went back and found the dead bird for positive ID. Cuckoos are rare here but there is a population in spite of the urban habitat.
