DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit teenager was charged Thursday with assault and a hate crime in the brutal mob beating of a suburban motorist who stopped to help a boy he accidentally struck with his pickup truck.
The 16-year-old boy is the only one of five people charged in the April 2 attack on Steve Utash to face an ethnic intimidation count. Utash, 54, is white. The teen and four adults charged in his beating are black.

Thanks carriage_hill. This is still a link to just a video which is just a “part” of the original video. This partial begins only about 4 or 5 seconds before the instant the Yute darts into the side of the truck.
The original video showed more of what was happening prior to that time and it appeared that there was some “practice” going on. Maybe that part of the video has now been (hopefully only temporarily) deep six’d. I’m sure the complete video from the gas station’s recorder is in possession of the “responsible” Detroit authorities.
There are a lot of T vids showing pretty much the same thing, but the before and after vids are gone.

Your assessment is technically correct! Local news ALWAYS describes the incident as though the driver hit the boy with his pickup truck...a TRUCK!
I guess it’s nice to see a Black being charged with a “hate” crime, but it still begs the point that “hate” crimes are a bad deal and should be taken off the books.
Why just the 16 year old?
Probably because he is a minor and will get out of the pokey despite the charges against him when he turns 21.
Nobody will know about it because he is is a minor.
They knew this was a hate crime, so they chose the easy way.

Had Trayvon lived, would he have had his felony assault and attempted murder charges upped by adding the hate crime charge?
I'm not sure what your point is.
My point is that what one is thinking during, or as a reason to commit a crime should be irrelevant. A crime is a crime is a crime.
Hate crimes are just an extension of the pervasive PC society that allows others to outlaw thoughts.
