MH370 'may be found in days’ as ship picks up signals again

Sydney - The search zone for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been limited to a narrow strip of the Indian Ocean, with the authorities confident that they will find the aircraft “in a matter of days” after two new sets of underwater signals were detected. :snip: They have all been heard within an area about 20 miles long and 10 miles wide, about 650 miles off the north-west coast of Australia, although a final search zone is yet to be demarcated. :snip: All the signals have been detected along a narrow strip of the Indian Ocean in an area known as Wharton Basin, a mostly flat underwater region that has not been mapped in 50 years. :snip: The latest signals did not feature two pulses, which were heard on Saturday and believed to be from the separate “pingers” on the black box’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. Authorities believe it is possible that one of the “pingers” has already died.

wow. from millions of square miles to a 10x20 area. 650 miles off Australia would be, what? 90 minutes out by air?

It is an impressive feat—I hope this ends with them successfully finding the crash site.

Some of the blame America first and 9/11-Truther crowd are trying to push the theory that the US took the plane and landed it at Diego Garcia for some sort of nefarious reason. I want to see that lie deflated ASAP!

I have heard that the ping device should have stopped transmitting a long time ago.

-9,000m depth. Are the CVR and FDR rated for that depth? Even if they aren’t is it possible for them to withstand the pressure?

It’s more like 4500m deep, which is certainly very deep, but well within the depths that flight recorder are supposed to be able to survive (they are certified to at least 6000m). It is however pretty much the maximum depth that the ROV Australia has sent down there is certified to operate at, which could make things awkward.

What’s interesting about the Wharton Basin is that there isn’t much info on it. There was a huge quake 7.8 magnitude quake in 2000 which should have generated some interest from geologists for study.

There are parts of the Wharton Basin that are deeper, but the area where the pings are being detected is around 4500 metres, according to a number of reports I’ve seen.

Bear in mind that in Australia, this is bigger news than it is elsewhere because of the proximity and our involvement in the search. The news channels are giving very regular updates of any information they have - or don’t have.

FREEPERS:

A quiz.

How many vessels are sending pings? ( )
How many vessels are receiving pings? ( )
How many frequencies are there? ( )

Thoughts:

There is something extremely fishy going on in that isolated part of the world.

That actually was a problem a few days ago - one of the early Chinese reports was probably a ship picking up errant pings - but that’s now well in hand.

The Australian Defence Force does know what it’s doing.

I think there is likely to be one this evening, but I am not sure - maybe in about four hours or so.

Me too, but nothing will stop the conspiracy nuts. You've even got some whack-a-doodle here on FR postulating that "they" have planted a black box in the ocean.

no ships are ‘sending’ pings. They are listening on microphones.

the frequency of the pings they’re focused on is 33.5. so other frequencies wouldn’t matter

from the pics I’ve seen, it looks like the Ocean Shield is the only large ship on target.

the Australians are also dropping listening bouys with microphones that will themselves drop on a tether to 1K feet below the surface
