You would think if you heard two more pings you would NOT reduce the search. You would INCREASE the search.
They aren't reducing the search. They are reducing the search area. Big difference. Reducing search area means focusing those assets on hand on a more specific area. If they can get two - three ships with the monitoring equipment to hear the pings they are hearing then they can triangulate and pinpoint the exact location.
