Australian official says since Ocean Shield vessel has reacquired signal he is 'optimistic' plane will be found soon

The search area for the missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370 has been drastically reduced after two further detections of pings consistent with those of a black box from a plane late on Tuesday.

The head of Australia’s Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre, Angus Houston, said on Wednesday the Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield had detected two further pings on Tuesday – one in the afternoon and one in the late evening – that had allowed the search area to be further refined to 75,000 sq km. He said he was “optimistic” the plane would be found soon.

“I can now tell you that Ocean Shield has been able to reacquire the signals on two further occasions; late yesterday afternoon and late last night,” Houston said.

I only post small pics that way, and overall I’d rather just use the clickable link anyway as a courtesy to the website.

You would think if you heard two more pings you would NOT reduce the search. You would INCREASE the search.

They aren't reducing the search. They are reducing the search area. Big difference. Reducing search area means focusing those assets on hand on a more specific area. If they can get two - three ships with the monitoring equipment to hear the pings they are hearing then they can triangulate and pinpoint the exact location.

I don't believe the image ever resides on the FR server - it just gets dragged to your browser when you either open the FR page with the proper image tag, or click on the link provided. Either way - if the user is going to view the image, it is going to cost the same amount of transfer time.

Someone - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

I have a feeling plane is mostly intact and for some reason is buoyant enough that its following an undersea current. It may be very deep on the other hand and under 30 feet of silt in a canyon.

So how far did they take it from Diego Garcia after removing it from the plane.

Does no one find it curious that there’s been a media blackout on the payload of tha plane? AFter initial reports of highly secretive cargo - that was developed by Chinese scientists - 6 of whom were on board- on it’s way to China?

No one curious at all? ZERO mention of the cargo or the scientists since the first day or so.

they may find the black box - after all, they can easily be removed from a plane - and ‘dropped.” - and everyone will believe whatever they’re fed.

this report is pretty eleborate not to have some basis - (Does everyone swallow the hype, that in this day and age, when they can read your number plate from space, that no one could ‘find’ this plane for the hundreds of miles it flew after making the turn from it’s flight path? The Sheeple continue to be gullible)

Yeah its quite the conundrum, one hand says the simplest explanation was it was a hijacking and yet the other hand is waving, pointing pumping up and down saying its over yonder, no wait its over there, no wait its over there.

Like someone attached some sporadic low powered pingers to several dolphins.

Occums razor, simplest explanation is often the right one.

you don’t seriously expect me to believe anything out of the Russian propaganda machine, do you? Or, more correctly, the moosefolk propaganda machine pretending to be Russian “sources”.

And Almagordo, NM? sight of nuclear testing in the 50’s?? ha! well that’s a big bust. Musta been the only place the mooses could think of thru their clouds of opium smoke.

The flight path of the plane doesn’t show it headed anywhere near Diego Garcia. The 270degree turn south was too much turn. they sure weren’t going to get to DG by hugging Indonesia’s coastline.

The towed array has much greater capabilities than that.

But, I suspect you already know this...

“... If they can get two - three ships with the monitoring equipment to hear the pings they are hearing then they can triangulate and pinpoint the exact location...”

One ship can get the bearings just fine and more ships would just muddle the acoustical noise. The way one ship gets multiple bearings is pretty easy and uses moving bearings. It's a straight forward vector geometry procedure using direction of the ship, relative bearing of the acoustic fix, time and speed.

Underwater, there are several parameters that introduce variability as the sound can bounce around, it's not just a straight line. In addition, I have no idea how fine this towed sound receiver can resolve the apparent direction of a signal or for that matter, how fine the location of the detector can be fixed. The detector is being towed at the end of a mile or two of cable and would be buffeted around by currents and such.

Also with bearings, there is no such thing as an exact fix, it is a probable location with some of amount of error. For example, with two bearings there is an apparent location where the two bearing lines cross but the amount of error is unknown. However, it is more accurate to have three bearings and when you plot these, you have three intersections and when you connect the dots, you have an area enclosed by a triangle with the apparent position somewhere inside the triangle. I am guessing that the reduction in the search area is based on multiple bearings that are enclosing a box bounded by this new and smaller search area. If the pinger will keep pinging, the box will keep getting smaller.

The pingers ping continuously and suppossedly have a range of about 3 miles but water can do all manner of strange things with sound in terms of redirecting, blocking and distorting.

That detectors are picking up sporadic pings indicates they are probably close enough that even if the pinger batteries fail, a grid search of the ocean floor in that area could be done and the debris field located in a resonable amount of time.

here’s the ‘explosion” in New Mexico

March 14 - dust storm

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=19681

also, if you go to the below, you’ll see the radar track being used in one conspiracy article has the date March 14 in the upper right hand corner, but the article itself claims the ‘explosion’ occurred March 19 (another conspiracist claimed March 17 - I guess the moosies can’t proofread either).

Ignoring the Tin Foil Conspiracy and using practical common sense yes a satellite can read your license plate. Now just what do you think the rest of the picture looks like? It would be a blur.

Remember the Fortune 500 CEO/Adventurer who in past adventures sailed around the world in a balloon etc.? He was traced because he had a specific following him. That's all they did and he paid for that team. Remember his final fate? He took a flight out in his personal aircraft to survey a potential land deal and disappeared. This wasn't thousands of miles from land this was inside the CONUS on dry land. Remember the efforts both public and private in search and rescue? It took what several years to locate the plane on dry land. They had a much, much, smaller area to search for him and much better conditions.

The ocean like land is full of mountains, ridges, ravines, etc. underneath the water you don't see where things can not be found. Thus one reason a sub was likely no where near either. Sub Commanders prefer routes with very well charted maps. This potential crash site IF this is it is not in the normal shipping lanes. Many ships are at sea but only a very small percentage have the capabilities to track air traffic and many many less to pick up a ping from aircraft. The most capable would be military.

Our Navy has been cut from almost 600 under Reagans watch to well under half that with orders coming down now to keep them in port as much as possible. The Australian Navy IF they happened to have a ship in that area could have possibly picked up the plane. Then again this seems to be in an area they aren't that concerned about national security wise.

I think they have located the actual boxes or rather the general area and no I don't think someone dumped them there. Either there was a suicidal crewmember or the plane got taken over quickly by hijackers.

This isn't the first commercial passenger airliner to go down for unexplained reasons and some still have never been located. Considering they are searching one of the largest and remote area of the oceans I think they are doing a great job at a near impossible task.

But then again some conspiracy theorist still think we sank The Kursk. One conspiracy theorist thought it was impossible for any of the passenger's on 911 to make a cell call. He read it in an article written by a Math Professor.

Yea that's the most accurate and likely the quickest. Three - four ships were getting pinging in the same general area. I think they'll have some wreckage located in a few days and maybe a box.

What people don't get is on land planes can fly for days in a search pattern looking for down craft on land in dense terrain without black boxes. In this circumstances they have a signal they have to locate first by no means easy & no fast practical means of a visual confirmation. It takes time, lots of skill, and luck. Satellites, radar, and sonar aren't magical wands. Neither are tracking transponders.

BTW I can go on line and see my property from an on file satellite photo. Guess what can not be seen? My house. LOL. Google earth can’t find it either. I can see my driveway but that’s all. I can see my neighbors houses all real well. Mine doesn’t show up and I know where to look for it.
