A NASA camera on Mars has captured what appears to be artificial light emanating outward from the planet's surface.
The photo, beamed millions of miles from Mars to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was taken last week, apparently by one of two NASA rovers on the red planet.

Just curious as during that point in the transit, the sun was higher in the sky from the west coast in 2012. So I suspect this was taken from the Midwest possibly.

I agree with you that just because someone says it’s happened with other photos doesn’t mean we should believe them. But watch any old movie an you’ll see film grain. Also, why would a light stop all of a sudden after reaching a certain height, instead of fading out gradually?
Actually, from this angle, you wouldn’t be able to see
LIGHT unless it was reflecting off of dust or something
in the atmosphere. Now maybe there is only dust four feet
from the ground or so.
Interesting phenom, you’d think NASA would steer the
rover a little closer for a better look.

It looks like a stuck pixel or group of pixels on the camera. It used to be pretty common on digital cameras that some of the pixels would fail and record either pure white or pure black.
Let me guess. The ratio of the sides is 1:4:9.
Stop and see if it appears again on the following Martian day at the same time. If it does, it would suggest sunlight reflecting off something shiny.
Worth checking other countries agencies to see if maybe it is the location of somebody’s old probe or rover device.

Not my first hunch, but could be...
I think all they’d have to move the camera and take another image to try and determine that.
right you are . Living in proximity to active volcanoes gives me a certain perspective . We know what ‘ fountains’ look like . That said , here on Earth volcanic fountaining smokes. In the Mars images I see no smoke.... Maybe Mars volcanism is smokeless , like fine gun powder.
