A NASA camera on Mars has captured what appears to be artificial light emanating outward from the planet's surface.
The photo, beamed millions of miles from Mars to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was taken last week, apparently by one of two NASA rovers on the red planet.

Cosmic ray strike. I see them all the time on my CCD camera, even with the cover on (to shoot dark frames for calibration). Incidentally, it’s the exact same type of CCD as one of the CCDs used on the Curiosity rover.

Nah, I’m going with one of the posters on the article. It’s a Smart car flipped on it’s rear, with the headlights on.

Looks like the sun shining off of a black obelisk.
Nothing to see here, move along.

A more serious source of this light, said blogger Phil Plait, is that, "a subatomic particle smacked into the camera, leaving behind its trail of energy."I think that makes sense. Similar things have happened before with other scientific photos.

Odd that a camera artifact (light leak) and a *glimmer rock* should stay in the same position and apparent brightness as the rover moved a decent distance.
Seems like sun angles and such should have changed things some................Just saying :)

Could be a camera artifact.

Today earth is in inferior conjunction for an observor on Mars, but I doubt he/she/it would see the earth transit the disk of the sun. Anyway the photo was taken last week. So not a light bouncing off a Martian astronomer’s telescope.

Could be a camera artifact. Don't see how it could be a camera artifact, holds position on the topography as the camera angle and rover position changes.
A camera artifact would change position on the topography as the rover and camera moved.
Can probably say the same for the sun hitting a *glimmering rock*.
You don't have to move too far watching a mirror reflecting sunlight in the distance for the bright image to change or disappear all together.
Just weird enough for NASA not to investigate further..........Again :)

Thank you for keeping us up to date on the Grovers Mills affair. There are way too many non-believers out there.
