U.S. to trim air, sea and land nuke launchers under U.S.-Russia treaty: officials 11:32am EDT
By David Alexander
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will scale back its land, sea and air nuclear missile launchers under a New START treaty with Russia but not retire a ballistic missile squadron as some lawmakers had expected, U.S. officials told Reuters.
The U.S. military will disable four missile launch tubes on each of its 14 U.S. nuclear submarines, convert 30 B-52 nuclear bombers to conventional use and empty 50 intercontinental ballistic missile silos, senior administration officials said on condition of anonymity.
The plan is expected to be formally announced on Tuesday.
One official said the government wanted to maintain flexibility across its land, sea and air weapons systems. "It provides us a bit of a hedge," said the official.
The New START treaty reached in President Barack Obama's first term called for cuts in the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads in the United States and Russia to 1,550 apiece by 2018, down from the previous ceiling of 2,200. It was agreed in 2010 and went into force on February 5, 2011.

And just what does Russia give up?.......(crickets)
Damn...look how “flexible” Obama can be.
Treasonous, traitorous bastage.
While Russia is moving across Eastern Europe it’s vital we cut back on our military.
/sarc
And has Congress ratified this treaty?
What happen???
Someone set us up the bomb!!!
“And has Congress ratified this treaty?”
The president does not need ratification as all military forces are under his command. He could, for example, order all Air Force and Navy planes scrapped tomorrow at 9:00am. At this point, I’m not certain the order would be complied with, but he has eliminated dozens of command level officers for some reason.
Under Obama’s command, the Minutemen would have brought tea to the British Regulars.
When was this ratified by the Senate?
Obamie must be so proud...in a leftist whacko radical sort of way.
The good think about reducing the number of nukes is that it saves money and makes it easier to safeguard the remaining inventory. The bad thing is that at some inventory level the situation becomes unstable in the sense that a preemptive strike can disable so much of the other side's force that a first strike becomes tactically advantageous for the side that disables the other side's capability. In other words, reducing the stockpile below a certain threshold is destabilizing. It is time (or past time) to start worrying about whether we are there or about to reach that level.
This is insane............................
WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!! What ever happened to 'bargaining chip' and holding this agreement hostage in exchange for a Putin reversal in the Ukraine? Team Barry are the most traitorous administration, EVER!!!!! This smells like Barry is a Soviet-operative. His parents met in a Russian language class, hmmmm....
When it came out of committee(14-4), Kerry and Lugar has a signing ceremony, which Big Henry attended so as to bestow his blessings on the treaty. In the run=up to the senate ratification all the Realist Ex-SOSs came out in a co=ordinated effort of support. Kissinger, James Baker, George Schultz, Colin Powell, Condi Rice.
The NeoCons threw up a big battle to stop it but as I recall it passed with 71 votes
So the ‘outrage a day’ coming from this administration since Jan. 20, 2009 continues without pause or quarter. Traitorous Marxists.
