The police said that Jan Peter Schmittmann, 57, killed his wife Nelly, 57, and his youngest daughter, Babette, 22, and then took his own life. A goodbye letter was found in the home, they said.

The bodies of the family were found Saturday in their villa in the village of Laren, around 20 miles southeast of Amsterdam. The daughter was confirmed to be mentally disabled. The oldest daughter, 25, wasn’t home at the time, the police said.

When I worked for IBM’s Global Business Continuity and Resiliency team, I met Jan while in Amsterdam working on another customer. I was introduced by the local IBM team. He did not seem to be the type of person to commit suicide.

But I really didn’t know him and it has been a long time. Just seems a tad odd to me.

Apparently you misjudged him. I happen to know a lot of people who don’t seem to be the type to commit suicide. I’ll have reconsider the problem.

I agree. A couple of the bankers may have been murdered in a conspiracy but the total numbers of deaths by unrelated suicide would seem to indicate some real stress in the system.
