The Tory revolt over Europe took a dramatic turn last night after senior Conservative David Davis called on the Government to open talks with Brussels on quitting the EU.

Former Tory chairman Mr. Davis tore into David Cameron, accusing him of making a mess of his pledge to win back powers from the EU.

“Scaremongers” who said Britain would collapse if it decided to go it alone were talking nonsense, said Mr Davis. Quitting the EU would be like a “revolution” and would boost UK jobs, wages, world power, arts and prestige, he added.

Significantly, his intervention comes days after two televised political debates in which anti-EU leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage, crushed pro-EU Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. …

Almost any backbencher would be superior, as PM, to Cameron the Cokehead.

Britain has options — the Commonwealth of Nations being the most obvious. (2.5 billion people, $13 trillion GDP.)

Britain relinquished the Commonwealth long ago.

South Africa is gone. India (the jewel in the Crown) is gone. Canada, Australia, and New Zealand look to the USA for defense and trade. What is left?

The UKIP ought to be the Conservative Party...Cameron, with his insistence on being part of the EU and his perverted obsession with forcing sodomy down the throats of Britons, has destroyed the integrity of the party of Churchill and Thatcher.

You may be confusing the Empire (gone) with the Commonwealth — still alive and kicking. SA and India are part of the Commonwealth. A subset of the Commonwealth, the “Commonwealth Realm” comprises nations that recognize Queen Elizabeth II as the reigning constitutional monarch (i.e. Head of State). Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, and a dozen other nations are members of the Realm.

Recently, a “movement” began to create a “Commonwealth Union”, which would be a free-trade bloc, a visa-free travel area (like the EU), have a common foreign policy, etc. This idea hasn’t gone too far (yet); but, it is, as I said, an option for Britain.

Cameron wasn’t working alone. Churchill and Thatcher were the exceptions.

For a throroughly entertaining 59 minutes go to YouTube and watch debate #2. I watched it last night. Its like watching the Republican debate the Democrat and the moderator takes up for the Democrat. I loved it. Nigel is hysterical.

Right on! UK-England is an island that is harmed by the Continent based EU. On immigration for one, UK needs to break away. UK can associate itself with the EU same as Norway and Switzerland do

UK always kept the Pound £ so they are ahead of the curve

Not possible. The homosexual lobby would not allow those countries to keep their sodomy laws.

Oh, I think it could be put together again -- pace Humpty Dumpty. Not too sure about South Africa, though.

He's not serious. Talk about quitting the EU would only be to undercut the UKIP, and would be dropped after the election.

I'll not be surprised if the Clegg's Liberal Democrats see a big boost, even though he got clobbered in the polling after the debates, because Labour, like the Tories, blew them off, and the LD will receive a sort of protest vote from the pro-EU Labour voters (and pro-EU Tory voters as well), while UKIP gets both the Euroskeptics from all walks and those who were fence-sitters before those debates.

The rest of British voters will do as they always do and vote for what's left of their parties.
