Well put it this way: Republican Bernard Kerik cheated on his taxes one time and got 4 years in jail. Democrat Charles Rangel cheated on his taxes multiple times and got a slap on the wrist from Nancy Pelosi and then got reelected.

In defense of Rangel, there's actually a difference under U.S. law between tax evasion and tax fraud. Kerik pleaded guilty to multiple counts of a Federal indictment that included tax fraud. This would mean he didn't just fail to report income on his tax returns ... he actively took steps to hide it from the IRS.

As far as Rangel goes, it's important to remember that Democrats in Washington (Pelosi in particular) don't take minorities seriously. She probably figured that Charles Rangel is barely capable of reading and writing at a fifth-grade level, let alone understanding a tax return.

P.S. Kerik's crimes mainly involved soliciting and taking bribes from contractors doing business with the City of New York while he was serving as the police commissioner. The Federal indictment also included charges that he falsified information in his background check when he was appointed to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the Bush Administration.

He should consider himself lucky with that four-year sentence. If he had been convicted on all counts he could have faced 142 years worth of sentences.
