(CNN) -- A Chinese patrol ship looking for signs of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in the southern Indian Ocean discovered Saturday a pulse signal with a frequency of 37.5 kHz, state news agency Xinhua reported. "That is the standard beacon frequency" for both so-called black boxes -- the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, said Anish Patel, president of pinger manufacturer Dukane Seacom. "They're identical." But experts cautioned that no confirmation had been made that the signal was linked to the missing plane. "This could be a variety of things," said oceanographer Simon Boxall, who said the frequency is used by a variety of instruments. "We've had a lot of red herrings, hyperbole on this whole search," the lecturer in ocean and earth science at the University of Southampton told CNN. "I'd really like to see this data confirmed." He added, "It could be a false signal."

The Chinese have been wrong every time they’ve made an announcement of finding something. I think they’re making discovery announcements to try to impress.
I don’t believe a word they say.
Bump.
Just saying. This is a significant announcement, even if it’s not verified yet.
Yes, but THIS is C-N-N.
That adds some credibility, doesn't it?

If a ship detected the signal, you would think they would remain on station and stay locked onto the signal until others arrived.
I wouldn’t misunderestimate the Chinese as far as technology goes. Or as a foe.
Why do I have that nagging feeling this is all just a big show......because it is.
This is great! CNN will have news to report for a whole week!!
Fox is covering this well.
Kudos.
Especially from their state news organization.
LoL!
It’s just Mr Limpet :-)
For the sake of the families, I hope the Chinese got this one right.
I was reading the other day that the sonic telltale on the black boxes have a short lifespan.
It seems like a very poor design to just constantly be pinging as that drains batteries and seems unnecessary.
Years ago I designed some multi-use cylinders that could be dropped in the water that could be located later by sending a sequence of tones that they would pick up and respond to. The on-board processor kept them in a sleep state over 99% of the time. They woke every few seconds to listen and immediately shut down if nothing heard. Battery life was a couple of years...not a few weeks as is being said of the black boxes. It would be easy to modify the design to both listen and every few minutes emit a few quick pings, this would only slightly decrease the battery lifespan...I wonder who designed the system in the black boxes? ... seems poorly thought out..
“The Chinese have been wrong every time...”
Most likely jacking CNN’s chain.
Back to the cockpit, boys.
“I wouldnt misunderestimate the Chinese as far as technology goes.”
As long as there is a liberal in Washington, China will
have access to Americas technology.
Probably a whale fart.
Ahhhh...... false reporting , viewership declines further (from 50 to 3).
Stock price weakens. Chicaps sell their shares and price declines further. Chicaps buy it all and obtain foothold in the American news business
Is anyone else questioning all of this intense action on a downed plane? Think about it. Since when does a downed plane cause such a massive effort for this length of time by the entire world? I find it odd.
