I have wondered for years now about WHY those who commit such violence were being given so much attention.

Are you talking about Ivan Lopez or the thousands of black teens accross the country playing the knockout game?
You see, if you agree the media should zip it with regard to the man who shot up Fort Hood yesterday, then you also have no problem with the media ignoring the black on white violence rampant in our country.
I got news for ya. Ignoring those who commit violence is not going to make the problem go away.
Non sequitur.
Are you deliberately misinterpreting what is being said?
You are comparing apples and oranges in several respects.
Mass shooters is the subject here. They do not deserve the fame they get from having their names and pictures plastered on every TV screen 24/7 for weeks on end.
Many mass shooters want the publicity, even if they die in the act.
The fact is, she is reporting on the shooting, not hiding it like the crimes you wish to compare it to.
The name of thugs who participate in the “knockout game” is often not known, so how can the names be withheld?
Yes, the media hides the race of those thugs, but that is not the issue here. She said that the name sounded Hispanic.
I agree with her decision in this case. As for your accusations, it is not becoming to try to paint those who disagree with your viewpoint as somehow advocating media blackouts on certain news stories. It is quite an ugly accusation.
Unfortunately, I see this type of thing too often on FR lately.
“Are you talking about Ivan Lopez or the thousands of black teens accross the country playing the knockout game?”
The big difference there is that the black teens are not committing those crimes seeking fame and public recognition. In fact, that’s probably the last thing they want. So, not naming those criminals does nothing to reduce the possibility of any future attacks.
In the case of mass killers, it very well might.
