I'm a little skeptical of that conclusion. If he forgot to set his watch then he probably would forget to set the clock of the timing device also unless the timing device was a cellphone or something that automatically updates.

I’d guess it was drug related. Maybe... Curiousity killed the cat. If he stayed close enough to see his handiwork, not knowing the power of the device, he could have caught a face full of shrapnel.
