WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A massive magnitude 8.0 earthquake on Tuesday off the coast of Chile, near the mining port of Iquique, sparked a tsunami warning for all of Latin America's Pacific coast, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," it said.

Which way?
See which way the Democrats are running and run in the opposite direction.
Same area just got lit up with a 7.2 at 10:44
Very cool chart. Interesting how much energy is in a large lightning bolt, and how relatively little in an average tornado, as most comparisons I’ve seen show an average thunderstorm exceeding the Hiroshima blast. Then again, an average thunderstorm might last an hour, and an “average” tornado is, I suppose, maybe an F1 that lasts 5 minutes...? So, duration is surely at play in these figures.
For comparison, a 1 mile dia. asteroid whacking us would release roughly the equivalent of 2.26E5 Megatons of TNT, or, if I’ve punched my calculator correctly, 452 quadrillion lbs. of TNT.
OK...do you know how I can get Tsunami alerts for the Oregon coast via text? Anyone?
LOLOL....right!
Alert:..NEW CHILE EARTHQUAKE....
Even the President was evacuated.
A new 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Northern Chile following an 8.2-magnitude jolt in the same region..... the day after a deadly 8.2 jolt in the same region, authorities said.
....people in the north who had just endured the latest quake were again ordered to evacuate inland from coastal areas, according to authorities.
The new temblor struck at 2343 (0143 GMT Thursday; 9:43 am, Philippine time), 20 km (14 miles) south of the city of Iquique, the navy’s alert service said.
“Based on its strength a tsunami warning has been issued,” the Chilean national oceanographic agency, known as SHOA, added.
Waves have started lashing the coast, said Ricardo Toro of the national disaster relief agency ONEMI.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who was assessing damage in the northern city of Arica far north of the capital Santiago, was among those evacuated to higher ground, said state run TVN.

The biggest risk is aftershocks for the 8.2 in the same area where the 8.2 occurred. Theyll become less frequent with time, but the risk still exists for days and weeks, Hutton said. Scientists still dont have a way to predict when and where earthquakes will hit, so it is impossible to say whether other quakes will strike along rim areas, she said.
The most susceptible areas on the Ring of Fire include such populated cities as Santiago, Chile; Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; Tokyo, Japan; and Lima, Peru.

Chile, getting pounded by big quakes for 2nd day, 5.6mag, 5.4mag and 7.8, all shallow (less than 20km down).
53 earthquakes of 4.5 or higher have hit the country in the last week, most of them centered near the port city of Iquique, which has a population of about 180,000.
For comparison, in the last 30 days, only 13 4.5+ earthquakes have hit the continental United States, none bigger than the 5.1 magnitude quake that hit near LA last week
