Thanks, Errant. More damage at shallow depth makes sense.

Possible. From AP:
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A powerful earthquake has struck in the Pacific off Chile's northern region, and authorities have ordered an evacuation of coastal areas in case of a tsunami. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 and struck 61 miles (99 kilometers) northwest of Iquique, Chile, at 8:46 p.m. It hit in an area that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.
The latest tremor shook buildings in parts of the nearby nations of Bolivia and Peru.

If it shook buildings in Bolivia and Peru, it was a strong one.

That is a major quake. I hope there is ample warning to all concerned if a tsunami forms.

The Caribbean Plate sounds yummy not sure about the Cocos Plate though =)
To: PghBaldy
Indeed. I have a feeling there will be some damage from this one, given the shallow depth it occurred at, even if it was offshore.

Looks like the Pacific Ring of Fire is gradually waking up. We all should try to prepare ourselves.

We’re over due for another ice age. It’s my opinion the start of each is related to increased seismic activity. We may be witnessing the beginnings of such now.

Watch for a resonant wake up in the Yellowstone region and in Alaska. If Yellowstone goes off you can count it the start of the next Ice Age.
