Will the rest of the world take steps now to isolate this outbreak,or do we wait until cases develop in Europe or here?

How long before Liberian or other African Patient Zero gets off a plane in New York City, and we have an American Ebola epidemic?

Halt all travel to or from the place NOW

that would be a responsible action

Not to minimize any deserved seriousness, but isn't ..

dozens in Guinea was an "unprecedented epidemic"

.. just a tad prematurely hyperbolic ?

or perhaps, premature and/or hyperbolic .. whatevah

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

The spread from Guinea to Liberia, which has taken weeks, is not exactly sweeping the globe. The average African travels little and not far from home. It just sounds ominous because the germ passed some imaginary line on a map.

What are viral hemorrhagic fevers?

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) refer to a group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses.
In general, the term “viral hemorrhagic fever” is used to describe a severe multisystem syndrome (multisystem in that multiple organ systems in the body are affected).

Characteristically, the overall vascular system is damaged, and the body’s ability to regulate itself is impaired. These symptoms are often accompanied by hemorrhage (bleeding); however, the bleeding is itself rarely life-threatening.
Some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, but many of these viruses cause severe, life-threatening disease.

While no country has yet experienced the effects of a severe Ebola outbreak, in some extreme instances, particularly in equatorial African nations, victims of VHF have risen from their graves and walked the earth, preying on the living and infecting anyone in their paths with the chasing and biting and hurting and weird squealing noises they make.
Yep, it’s the Dawn of the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Sufferers. We’re doomed.
