People get so intimidated and put off of German because of those bizarrely long words. I don’t know whether it’s lazy, efficient or some combination of the two, but once you know they’re just running a bunch of shorter words and/or names together, it’s more comical than intimidating.

Contrary to a lot of nonsense, Germans have an excellent sense of humor, and like any sense of humor that isn't based in cruelty, most of it is self-deprecating. They're the first to admit how comical their straightforward compounding makes long nouns appear and sound.

The Welsh do the same thing. In fact, I believe the longest known word in any language is a Welsh place-name, which not only describes but gives brief directions to the town.
