Thats bananas!
A Brooklyn movie house in health-food-centric Park Slope called the cops on a diabetic customer just because he was munching strawberries that were sold outside the cinema.
It was embarrassing. I didnt expect it. Two police officers came and told me to leave with a full theater of people watching. I said Is this for real? and they said, Yes, you have to leave, said Michael Kass, a 41-year-old financial analyst.
Kass, who has Type 2 diabetes, couldnt eat the junk food for sale at the Park Slope Pavilion, so he brought a carton of prewashed strawberries to keep his insulin level in check during a showing of Divergent on Sunday, he said.
But before he could watch the action flick, a worker cut him off near the theater entrance and checked his bag demanding he toss the forbidden fruit and explaining no outside food is allowed, Kass claims.
The strawberry-stashing father of three tried to explain his disease, but they didnt seem to care, he said, so he asked a manager to refund his $12 ticket.
When the manager refused, he stuffed his snack back in the bag and took a seat in the theater, he said.

“Type 2 on drugs can have ups and down in blood glucose just like type 1. You always carry food”
ok, you’re right, if he was on glipized, which stimulates the pancreas he could experience a low. but, lets look at this logically.
first, he needs to be on insulin or the aforementioned glipized to be concerned about a low. if he is one of the millions not on one of those, he can sit in a theater like anyone else.
second, ok, so if he is on a blood sugar lowering drug, strawberries are not what you would use to bring it up.
third, unless you are in an active low, a diabetic can go 2 a hours without eating or “keeping his blood sugar level”.
really, this story makes very little sense.
And a lighter.
“When the manager refused, he stuffed his snack back in the bag and took a seat in the theater, he said.”
How about follow the rules, leave, and file complaints rather than forcing yourself on a business which clearly does not want you?
Do you have right to strawberries at a theater?
I haven’t been to the Movie theater since the Hobbit and this is a big part of why. The whole movie industry can eat the peanuts out of my turds. They are no longer entertaining to me.
“Its the theatres right to decide what goes on in its establishment.”
Precisely. And they should not be forced to serve these people who want special treatment because of their “condition”. Leave if you don’t like the rules. I am sure there are other theaters allowing his strawberries... if not, open your own theater.

Not only can you safely eat strawberries if you have diabetes, but in fact you are encouraged to do so. Strawberries and other fruits have numerous health benefits and are a healthful part of the diabetic diet. In addition, a growing body of research suggests that strawberries have an ingredient that is helpful in treating type 2 diabetes.
“if he has type 2 and doesnt use insulin, he has no medical need to eat to raise his glucose, so somethings fishy.”
Nonsense! My wife has type 2 and to maintain her blood sugar at acceptable levels she eats fresh fruit in place of the kind of crap that theaters sell. Once again, NYC announces to the world that they are still a passel of a$$holes living in a sewer. It’s the only city I’ve ever been in where the cops look like they’ve slept in their uniforms. NYC has managed to make living illegal! As the song says. “Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly, but they don’t live long when they try!”
i’m not sure if you’re disagreeing with my post, I never said diabetics shouldn’t eat strawberries. I said if your sugar is low, strawberries are not the optimum food to bring it up.
And, as for the pigs, sue them, too! For violating his civil rights!
The theater doesn't need to exist, nor do its employees need jobs.
NYC, check.
NYPD, check.
Man NOT tazed, pepper sprayed, shot, or sodomized by the cops on grounds of clenched butt equalling hidden stash?
Something wrong here.
Did they at least do a finger wag or remove their sunglasses and look peeved?
Foot tapping?
“My wife has type 2 and to maintain her blood sugar at acceptable levels she eats fresh fruit “
are you saying she uses fruit to raise her sugar from a low?
is she on insulin?
i was replying to you just FYI
New York.
End of story.
tells you where to eat what, monitors and judges your words, regulates what you can think and believe, ....hell you cant even walk to a bar and have more than two drinks without some weazldix punk kid bartender monitoring every sip and slip of the lip, itchin to cut you off, with one finger on a button to bring in the cops if you stumble or slur a word....
and society will only get worse from here on
Too expensive and too little interesting things to watch. Throw in thugs and it’s just a waste of time.
This is kind of an overreaction; the police are there for real crimes, not asinine issues like this.
and a newspaper and a deck of cards.
Forgot the squirt gun.
“are you saying she uses fruit to raise her sugar from a low?
is she on insulin?”
No, simply to eat without consuming larger quantities of processed sugar. As you point out, you don’t have the problem of balancing insulin with sugar, but rather simply trying to maintain low blood sugar levels and enjoying something sweet, but healthful. Which is probably all the guy in the story was trying to do. I guess we’ve really gone so far that in order to make the desired profit, you have to tell a patron who has already ponied up for a ticket, that you can only eat what I provide so I can make more money off you.
I gave up going to movies for the most part years ago. First of all, they are expensive, and most of the movies are trash. And then you have to put up with other patrons misbehaving. Beyond that, I hate subsidizing actors and production companies who use my money against my personal values.
Ummmm "European Shoulder Bag"...
Maybe if he'd had eyeshadow on and claimed to be a homosexual they'd have given him a pass...
or not.
I think the theater does have the right to set their rules, just as the person has the right to not go there.
